While scrolling through Twitter yesterday, I came face-to-face with one of my arch rivals: this GE Digital Clock Radio from the late-80s and 90s. And it seems that it was the arch rival of many! You truly didn’t experience morning time pain in the 80s and 90s unless you woke up to the garbled Satanic sound farting out of the GE Digital Clock Radio!

My mom’s boyfriend got my sister that alarm clock for Christmas one year, and my sister’s young mind blew across the room from being able to wake up to the sound of I Want It That Way by The Backstreet Boys (or whatever the hell song was big at the time) blaring out of that mess. Only instead of it sounding like a song, it sounded like a hoarse-voiced demon screaming through a rusty telephone can. And since I shared a room with her, it woke me up like a static nightmare every morning, and waking up to an icicle dildo shoved into my ears would’ve been more pleasant (no, it wouldn’t have, but you know…). But my sister cherished it, and she still does. It still sits on her nightstand. Although, she only uses it as a clock, because I’m sure the radio quit life years upon years ago.
And just like the GE Digital Clock Radio in that picture, my sister’s was decorated with paint splatters from us being too lazy to remove it from the room or cover it while painting. I mean, that thing fucked up many of my sweet dreams, but if anything belongs at the MET, it’s that American treasure!
