Shaggy Doesn’t Audition, Not Even For Rihanna
In a recent interview with Britain’s Daily Star (via Vulture), reggae crossover star Shaggy spoke on how he recently turned down appearing on Rihanna’s much-anticipated new album because she asked him to audition first. What’s Patois for “Google me, dumb fuck”? That’s probably how he expressed his disappointment to her.
Shaggy’s has been the reggae feature on every song that has a reggae guy featured on it for the last three decades so it’s not like Ms. Fenty didn’t know who he is. Maybe she was looking for the new voices but didn’t want to hurt his feelings so she thought she’d make it a challenge? Either way, feelings were obviously getting hurt. Spoiler alert: His feelings were obviously hurt.
“They approached me for the Rihanna project, yeah,” the musician reportedly told Britain’s Daily Star. “There’s a lot of great people involved, but for me, I didn’t need to audition to be on the record. I’ll leave that to younger guys. But from what I hear, it should be good.”
Rihanna’s ninth album will supposedly drop in 2020, and it’s rumored to have a Caribbean dancehall-flavored vibe to it which would put it firmly in Mr. Boombastic’s wheelhouse. He welcomes the competition. Note: Shaggy shares a 2019 Grammy with Sting for Best Reggae Album (44/876).
“It’s healthy competition,” he said. “Dancehall is in good place but we need as many people to do this art form as possible. When it crosses over and becomes popular with artists from other genres and other cultures, that can only be good.”
Shaggy will always be that guy that it wasn’t after being caught buck-naked on the bathroom floor. He’ll also be the guy who made a lot of people cringe with that exact line about having sex buck-naked on the bathroom floor. That’s just nasty. Think of what goes on in bathrooms. He didn’t even say it was in the shower with the hot water running and soap and stuff. He didn’t even mention being on the bath mat. Just the floor. Rihanna probably initially wanted him on the album, remembered that gross lyric, and quickly made up this audition bullshit.
