Skinny Dip Cologne!

Reader Angie dropped this HSOTD nomination into my inbox, and also opened up my brain to the time when Pfizer, the company responsible for many a pepaw boner (because they make Viagra), got into the perfume game after buying Leeming, the makers of beauty and personal care items. Almost two decades before those hard dick-inducer pills hit the market, Pfizer-Leeming put out Skinny Dip, a bottle of aromatic nectar that was supposed to travel from a man’s nose to his dick and cause him to want to get naked and skinny dip in your lady pond. Just ask Sandy Duncan!

Skinny Dip first came out in 1970, and there were several fragrances including the cologne. A scent aficionado/commenter on Fragrantica described in serious damn detail how their nose sensory cells took in a spray of Skinny Dip cologne. Screw ASMR, reading how this expert in floral stank describes fragrances is a serious soul soother.

Out of the bottle, the citrus notes are wobbly and almost rancid. Then I sprayed them and they woke up for the most part-lemon, lime, tangerine, raspberry and strawberry dance for a moment, then give way to orange blossom, honeysuckle and jasmine. I get some fresh green(herbal-vetiver/oakmoss?)notes. The aldehyde/ozone accord is not traditional for this type of composition. Somehow it bring everything together. There is a light musk resting on some blonde woods. It’s quite buoyant and fresh.

Here’s the commercial for Skinny Dip cologne where a 20-something Sandy Duncan plays a homely basic who is hard-up for the attention of men, but they barely know she’s alive. So she runs off, sprays herself down with Skinny Dip (which is just like skinny dipping in a lake of Spanish Fly), and when she comes back, the dudes inhale a whiff of her Skinny Dip cologne, and suddenly they got the hornies in a major way and want that ass!

Skinny Dip’s tagline was: It’ll make you feel pretty. And the commercial makes it look like the way you feel pretty is for men to pay attention to you. What I’m saying is that Skinny Dip cologne was the official perfume of the Women’s Rights Movement. But after reading that Fragrantica commenter’s description of its scent, maybe it didn’t tickle the boners of men awake. Maybe they were just really hungry for a slightly-rancid fruit salad served on some tree moss.
