Pharrell Williams Has Denounced “Blurred Lines”

Pharrell Williams has washed his hands of Blurred Lines stating that he wishes he had thought about how it would make someone feel before being a part of it. He’s not wrong, Blurred Lines did always feel like a song pulled directly from a date rapist wet dream. But with a super catchy beat.

Pharrell told GQ in an interview that older white women would react to that song in a big way and so he didn’t think it was “rapey“. And as Chris Rock pointed out in his stand up, some women will dance to ANYTHING with a beat. The amount of women who scream, “As the sweat drip my balls!” is insane.

via GQ:

“Because there were older white women who, when that song came on, they would behave in some of the most surprising ways ever. And I would be like, wow. They would have me blushing. So when there started to be an issue with it, lyrically, I was, like, What are you talking about? There are women who really like the song and connect to the energy that just gets you up. And I know you want it—women sing those kinds of lyrics all the time. So it’s like, What’s rapey about that?

Also there’s a lyric in the song that goes, “You want to hug me, what rhymes with hug me?” Ummm…. fuck me doesn’t rhyme with hug me, Robin, but drug me does…. I know I’m going down a rabbit hole here but I can almost guarantee that’s Bill Cosby‘s favorite lyric.

Pharrell went on to state that he realized the song was bigger than just himself:

And then I realized that there are men who use that same language when taking advantage of a woman, and it doesn’t matter that that’s not my behavior. Or the way I think about things. It just matters how it affects women. And I was like, Got it. I get it. Cool. My mind opened up to what was actually being said in the song and how it could make someone feel. Even though it wasn’t the majority, it didn’t matter. I cared what they were feeling too. I realized that we live in a chauvinist culture in our country. Hadn’t realized that. Didn’t realize that some of my songs catered to that. So that blew my mind.

Pharrell’s not the only one embarrassed by that song, Emily Ratajkowski hates that she was in the video. Also, Blurred Lines cost Pharrell and Robin $5 millio for ripping off a Marvin Gaye song. I’m not usually one to believe in curses but this song is definitely cursed. I mean, Pharrell has rebuked it but Robin Thicke hasn’t and things in his life are well, not great. So I guess the moral of the story is that the next time you rip off Marvin Gaye, try not to make it so “rapey.”
