Earlier this summer, Rebel Wilson decided to fight Bauer Media, the publisher of Woman’s Day, who published an exposé about her pre-fame life. Rebel sued for defamation and general life-ruining, claiming that she lost big Hollywood roles after Woman’s Day dragged her into a scandal about her real age and name, calling her a “serial liar.” She ended up winning the lawsuit.
Rebel said at the time that she wasn’t doing it for the damages, which is fine, but come on, who doesn’t like money? As it turns out, she will get serious cash out of it.
According to CNN, an Australian court has awarded Rebel Wilson $3.6 million in damages. I thought a judge was trying to be cute by giving her 3.6 to match her real age, but she’s actually 37. In Australian dollars, that $3.6 million works out to a little over $4.5 million. It’s the largest defamation damages award in Australian legal history. The amount was broken down in the following way: $650,000 AUS in general damages, and $3.9 million in special damages, which would refer to any movie money she might have lost out on. The judge also justified rewarding such a high judgement to send a message that the defamation against Rebel Wilson was legit and should be taken seriously.
Rebel had quite a bit to say about it all on Twitter after the judgement was awarded. She wants you to know IT’S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY! But she’s happy to have it, and that some of it will be going to good use.
Justice Dixon has awarded me a record sum and I’m extremely grateful for that. It is 4 times the Australian record. To me though, this case wasn’t about the money. I’m looking forward to helping out some great Australian charities and supporting the Oz film industry with the damages I’ve received. Also looking forward to getting back to my career and entertaining everyone! Thank you again for the love and support! I am humbled
Rebel shouldn’t give all of that money away. At the very least, she might want to keep a sizable pile of dollars on hand for the day that rumored Little Shop of Horrors reboot is released and people demand their money back.
These pictures are very old, but they work all too well with this story. Here is Rebel Wilson and Liam Hemsworth filming Isn’t It Romantic in New York City in July. I hope she kept that Pretty Woman costume. She’s rich now, she should dress like it!
