Sonique!

Ja Rule’s Fyre Musical Festival, which made the Gathering of the Juggalos look like something that Robin Leach would cover on a rebooted episode of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, could’ve easily saved itself. All of the festival goers would’ve stopped fighting each other with homemade spears for the last drop of drinkable water on that nightmare island if Ja Rule came out and announced that the new headliner is SONIQUE! Anybody would gladly eat a dry sandwich and sleep on a deflating mattress on the sand if it meant hearing Sonique live and in person.

Sonique (born name: Sonia Clarke) still makes music, performs and DJ’s today, but her biggest hit landed on ears in the late-90s and early-aughts. The English club chanteuse’s It Feels So Good came out in December 1998 and it was a hit, but it didn’t really become a hit hit until it was re-released in 2000. It became the third-biggest selling single in the UK in 2000 and made it into the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the U.S. Nearly every club I went to back then played It Feels So Good at least forty five times in one night and I probably sweat 800 gallons in my pleather bootcut pants while dancing on a box as haters threw me looks that screamed, “You really need to get off that box before I die of secondhand embarrassment.”

And the video reminds me of simpler and better times when you could just show up to the club in a casual look, like a department store bra (at the 2:50 mark) and could also have fuck times with ice cubes in the bathroom without getting kicked out (at the 2:18 mark).

Sonique from the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race supposedly named herself after this Sonique. That puts Sonique in a league above many other singers, because a Drag Race contestant naming herself after you is the ultimate honor.
