La Choy Mini Egg Rolls!

In the 80s, when you couldn’t get a reservation or make it to the authentic three-Discount Tire star (that’s way better than a three-Michelin star, thankyouverymuch) Chinese restaurant Panda Express, you went to your grocer’s freezer section and picked up the next best thing: La Choy mini egg rolls! (Side note: I’m sure some messy chick chose “La Choy” as her cholita name back then.)

The internet tells me that Walmart may still carry this mess. But back in the golden era of everything, the 80s, these were absolutely everywhere. Shrimp is currently my sworn enemy, because I’m allergic to it and if I eat any, I end up looking like I just naked dry humped all over John Mayer (read: my skin gets covered in red spots). As a kid, I wasn’t allergic to shrimp, so whenever my friend’s mom would serve up some La Choy mini egg rolls, I’d shove as many as possible into my mouth.

They were usually soggy and had the texture of overdone oatmeal, but my friend and I couldn’t stop ourselves.

I don’t know if La Choy made a commercial specifically for their mini egg rolls, but they did make this commercial in 1985:

Beatrice is the name of the company that used to own La Choy and they got their name from the city they were once based in (Beatrice, Nebraska), but I’m guessing that Beatrice was also the name of their head chef. Beatrice probably spent decades studying the art of Chinese cuisine in China, because her food was THAT authentic!
