Ed Gernon, the dog he rescued and the hummingbird his dog rescued!

This classic tale of love between a dog, a man and a hummingbird is almost two weeks old, but it’s never too old to warm our bitter-crusted rotten hearts on a real-life Disney story. Ed Gernon tells CBS Los Angeles that last year he adopted a German shepherd mix named Rex, and Rex was apparently a mess. Rex was living on the streets, so he was doing what he had to do to survive. Rex hunted for food and scrapped with dogs and cats. Ed says that Rex was “dangerous,” but he adopted him anyway and brought the pooch into his home in Whittier, CA. They were one big happy family and then a new member fluttered on in. Well, she didn’t really flutter on in since the Grim Reaper was circling her, waiting to take her to the great beyond.

One month after Rex moved into Ed’s house, he found a hummingbird who was feather-less and covered with ants. Ed thought that she was dead, but she was still alive and he began to nurse her back to health. During the past year, Ed transformed into Florence Nightingale to care for the down-and-out hummingbird he named Hummer. (Side note: I wish I could make a joke about how my nickname in high school was “Hummer,” but I wasn’t humming on anyone back then.)

Ed feeds Hummer a special sugar formula every 15 minutes during the waking hours and he taught her how to fly again with help from a blowdryer. Hummer naps on his glasses, has her own drinking bowl next to Rex’s and even lets her human Ed kiss her. She’s lived in Ed and Rex’s house for about a year and she’s not looking to fly out of there anytime soon. Ed says that it’s time for her to mate and he leaves the windows open so she can go back into the wild, but she’s like, “And say goodbye to free and easy food? Fuck that.

Here’s their awww-inducing story:

If that news report featured a scene where Ed twirled around while singing a song as Hummer sat in his hand, it’d be the reboot of Snow White I’ve been waiting for. Disney needs to push aside all of their projects and put all of their focus into making anĀ Ed, Rex and Hummer movie.
