FX’s “Pose” Will End With Season 3

FX’s Pose, the series all about the ballroom scene, is coming to an end, as series creators Ryan Murphy and Steven Canals revealed that its upcoming third season will be the last. So you’re saying FX can have a thousand different iterations of American Horror Story but no more Pose? First, gay pride events get canceled for coronavirus, and now Pose is gone too? The gays haven’t taken this many hits since Ellen Degeneres told us she loves George Bush.

Deadline says that the first of the remaining seven episodes of Pose’s final season will premiere on May 2nd and take us into the year 1994 when the ballroom scene seems like a “distant memory” for lead, MJ Rodriguez‘s character Blanca. Billy Porter‘s character, Pray Tell, will be dealing with “unexpected health burdens” as AIDS swells in America becoming “the leading cause of death for Americans ages 25 to 44.” But obviously there’s still posing, dahling–“the emergence of a vicious new upstart house forces the House of Evangelista members to contend with their legacy.”

Steven, who also works as an executive producer on the show, gave a video message saying it was the end:

“Our audience has been so incredibly supportive of the show and I wanted to tell you directly our new season… will be its last. It was a very difficult decision for us to make, but this has been an incredible journey and we have told the story that we wanted to tell, the way that we wanted to tell it.”

He also shared a longer written statement:

Ryan Murphy commented as well, giving a statement:

“We got to tell the exact story we wanted, as we wanted to tell it, and I’m incredibly honored and grateful. Pose’s story may end in 1996, but its impact will go on forever… Pose has been one of the creative highlights of my entire career. From the very beginning when Steven Canals and I sat down to hear his vision and ideas for the show, it has been a passion project. To go from the beginning of my career in the late 90s when it was nearly impossible to get an LGBTQ character on television to Pose — which will go down in history for having the largest LGBTQ cast of all time — is a truly full-circle moment for me.”

Ends in ’96? So the last season takes us through two years? How about a spoiler-warning, Ryan! Fellow producer and writer for the show, as well as noted trans-activist, Janet Mock, also gave a statement saying:

“My life has been forever changed because of Pose, a drama series that centered around trans and queer people, people living with HIV/AIDS, and Black and Latinx people – without trepidation or apology. Though I am heartbroken to say goodbye to our beloved characters, I know the work my fellow writers and producers, our crew, and trailblazing cast did on Pose will live forever as a glittering, heart-filled, bright beacon of love, acceptance, family and community.”

Pose also starred Indya Moore, Angel Bismark Curiel, Dominique Jackson, and Angelica Ross. The series finale will air June 6. RIP Pose! Luckily we can still get our doses of drama thanks to Billy Porter always taking red carpets way too far and that’s how we like it. Here’s hoping before the series ends there’s another moment of Dominique Jackson’s Elektra Wintour reading a transphobe for filth:

Pose, I’ll think of you every time I see someone get every single hair follicle plucked from their heads in a verbal flaying. June 6 it’s back to “clam chowder and shallow conversations.”
