Open Post: Hosted By The Trailer For “The Sopranos” Prequel

The Sopranos prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark, has dropped its official trailer. Finally! A piece of pop culture I actually care about! The new movie, which will be released in theatres and HBO Max on October 1, was directed by Alan Taylor and written by Sopranos creator David Chase and Lawrence Konner. It’s set in 1967 during the Newark race riots and stars the late, great James Gandolfini’s son, Michael Gandolfini, as a teenage Tony Soprano, who shows a lotta potential (although he never had the makings of a varsity athlete), but gets led down the wrong path by his uncle Dickie Moltisanti (Christopha’s daddy), played by Alessandro Nivola. The trailer features a lot of beatdowns, guns, explosions, vintage cars, bellbottoms, go-go boots, menacing low-angle shots, and the return of Satriale’s. I’m in!

The prequel also stars Vera Farmiga as Livia Soprano, Jon Bernthal as Tony’s dad (hot), Billy Magnussen as Paulie Walnuts (wait, the guy from Aladdin?!), Corey Stoll as Junior Soprano (hot), John Magaro as Silvio Dante, and Ray Liotta and Leslie Odom Jr. in supporting roles.

Here’s the trailer:

A few things I’m curious about here… first off, is Vera Farmiga’s Livia Soprano gonna be evil enough? OG Livia, played by Nancy Marchand, loomed LARGE. Next up, are we gonna get a look at young versions of Carmela, Artie Bucco, and Charmaine Bucco? We know we got a Janice:

Finally, will this movie answer the second biggest unsolved Sopranos mystery of our time (now that David Chase cleared up Tony’s finale fate, number one is the Russian from “Pine Barrens”)? If that dirty cop really killed Christopha’s father Dickie Moltisanti? That’s what Tony told Chrissy, but my gut says it was bullshit…

I honestly can’t believe we’re getting new Sopranos content 15 years after the show ended. There are only so many times you can rewatch the series, ya know? I think I’m on #6 at this point. Except I always skip the episode where Ralphie beats the stripper to death. No thank you, please!
