Some television journalists can hold it together through difficult and unforseen circumstances––even when presenting live news, on-camera. Some journalists simply cannot. Well now, news anchors everywhere should be taking notes from Ukranian presenter Marichka Padalko, whose other-worldly level of cool took center stage this week when she managed to remain calm and exhibit grace and humility after a piece of her tooth fell out of her head while she was live, on-camera. And she managed to continue as if nothing had happened. This––THIS!––is dedication.
HuffPo says that Marichka, who was reading the news live on Ukraine’s TSN channel this week, managed to remain completely unfazed when her tooth fell out during the show’s broadcast and she gave the viewers instant hillbilly beauty. She didn’t call for a break, cut to a commerical or even draw attention to it. She simply grabbed the thing out of her mouth, put it aside and continued reading with a new massive gap on display. Not only was she unbelievably cool about it in the moment, she later posted the clip on her own Instagram page to laugh about it, writing in Ukrainian that the incident was “probably my most curious experience in 20 years as a presenter.”
In a translation of her post caption, Marichka claims that she broke her tooth about 10 years ago when her daughter accidentally bashed her in the mouth with a heavy alarm clock (personally, I want to know more about THAT incident), and although she had recently had repair work done on it, she had forgotten not to eat hard foods and cracked it again.
Please give this woman an international Emmy. If this is how she handles losing teeth on-air, I’d love to see how she’d manage to keep her cool while talking about Goya-gate.
