Like Jimmy Fallon, Justin Trudeau, Robert Downey Jr, 30 Rock gave the world blackface. And the show, which ran from 2006 to 2013, featured blackface in four episodes. And Tina Fey has apologized and asked that the episodes be scrubbed from TV and streaming services. I wonder if Megyn Kelly has had another meltdown yet?
HBO Max recently took down Gone With The Wind to add an intro to give some context to the racist material within the film. But unlike Gone With The Wind, these 30 Rock episodes won’t be available on streaming services anymore. Variety says that in two episodes, Believe In the Stars (from season 3) and Christmas Attack Zone (from season 5), Jane Krakowski does blackface. And Jon Hamm does blackface in Live From Studio 6H (season 6) and The Live Show (season 5).
Tina Fey and 30 Rock’s co-creator, Robert Carlock, wrote a note asking platforms to remove the episodes from streaming and syndication. They didn’t call it blackface, though. They called it “race-changing makeup.” They said the episodes were “best taken out of circulation” and apologized “for the pain they have caused.”
“As we strive to do the work and do better in regards to race in America, we believe that these episodes featuring actors in race-changing makeup are best taken out of circulation. I understand now that “intent” is not a free pass for white people to use these images. I apologize for pain they have caused. Going forward, no comedy-loving kid needs to stumble on these tropes and be stung by their ugliness. I thank NBCUniversal for honoring this request.”
A source told Variety all the episodes will be removed by the end of the week and Amazon and Hulu have already removed some episodes. They also won’t be available to buy on iTunes and Google Play.
Megyn Kelly must be so torn. How can she defend the “liberal agenda”-pushing 30 Rock? But at the same time, would she allow people to discriminate against the art of blackface? Sexy Jon Hamm blackface is really tempting her to the dark side of liberalism.
