Billy Dee Williams Came Out As Gender Fluid

Hollywood treasure Billy Dee Williams reprises his seminal role (there weren’t a lot of people of color in nerd space before Billy Dee) as Lando Calrissian in this month’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker which means he gets to go out on the press circuit and be the cool cat that he is. In an interview with Esquire, Billy Dee got into how he considers himself both masculine and feminine. He also got into his views on on-set romances which involved him using the words “sucking” and “fucking” and one has to appreciate Billy Dee’s eschewing of formality when it comes to sex talk.

In discussing his life’s philosophy of “be yourself,” Billy Dee, who is an accomplished artist as well as actor, revealed his pronouns.

In a simple tan button-up, with his hair slicked back, Williams continues his analysis of cool: “And you see I say ‘himself’ and ‘herself,’ because I also see myself as feminine as well as masculine. I’m a very soft person. I’m not afraid to show that side of myself.”

In discussing the making of The Empire Strikes Back which is where we first met Han Solo’s double-crossing bestie Lando Calrissian, Billy Dee got into the showmance that Princess Leia (the late, great Carrie Fisher) and Han Solo (bane of airport control towers everywhere Harrison Ford) were involved in during filming of the original movie. We only found out about Carrie and Harrison when she spilled the tea in her last memoir before her untimely death, 2016’s The Princess Diarist. Prepare to fan yourself as Billy Dee uses rude words to describe what sounds like anything but love.

On set, he befriended costars Carrie Fisher (who he says had a brilliant mind) and Harrison Ford (whom he still considers a dear friend), and he avoided workplace gossip. “As far as I’m concerned, I mean, I don’t care what people are—if they’re fucking each other and they’re sucking each other, whatever they’re doing, that’s fine with me. I don’t care,” he says of Fisher and Ford’s romance, as described in her memoir.

In the book, Carrie paints Harrison as a real dildo back then. Instead of some monosyllabic, emotionally-withholding adulterer, she could have had a smooth, self-aware individual like Billy Dee who paints, is completely in touch with his feminine side and probably has an unlimited supply of Colt 45. What could have been!
