Open Post: Hosted By Kurt Cobain’s $334,000 Cardigan

I’ve got some ratty old vintage cardigans hanging in my closet, and if I had to guess, I’d assume they’re worth approximately $0. I came to that highly-accurate estimate based on the fact that I was never the lead singer of a legendary 90s grunge band, and also because no one wants to buy a cardigan that smells like my armpits. But a musty-old cardigan that once belonged to Kurt Cobain is clearly worth more than $0.

BBC News reports that on Saturday, Julien’s Auctions put Kurt’s dirty green mohair cardigan up for sale after receiving it from Frances Bean’s former nanny Jackie Farry. Jackie claimed she received the sweater from Courtney Love after Kurt’s death in 1994. Kurt wore the sweater during Nirvana’s November 1993 performance on MTV Unplugged. The sweater was never washed or cleaned after Kurt wore it, and it also includes various stains and cigarette burns.

One of Kurt’s guitars was up for auction as well. A custom-made Fender Mustang that he used during Nirvana’s In Utero tour sold for $340,000 after being on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for several years.

The president of Julien’s Auctions described the sweater as “the holy grail of any article of clothing that he ever wore.” Which would probably explain why someone paid $334,000 to own it. It’s apparently the most expensive sweater ever sold at auction. I believe it! The only sweaters I can think of that are more famous than Kurt’s green mohair one are Cosby’s iconic sweaters, but I have a feeling those skipped past the auction house and went straight into a bonfire in Hell.
