In the wake of the death of Kate Spade two days ago, there have been many people with something to say including her sister Reta Brosnahan Saffo who said that her death was “not expected.” There were also a lot of rumors surrounding her death. Kate’s husband Andy Spade (brother of David) has released a statement to set the record straight.
Not long after the news broke about Kate’s suicide, there was talk that her death came shortly after she and her husband of 24 years had decided to split up. Sources say they hadn’t yet filed for divorce, but were planning on it. According to Andy’s statement (which you can read in full here), there was no talk of a divorce or a formal separation. However, for the past 10 months they had been living in separate homes in order to “work through” their problems. Andy claims they lived nearby, and ate meals together as a family with their 13-year-old daughter.
Andy also acknowledges that for the past five years, Kate had been actively seeing a doctor and taking medication for depression and anxiety. But her death was still a shock to him.
“Kate suffered from depression and anxiety for many years. She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives. We were in touch with her the night before and she sounded happy. There was no indication and no warning that she would do this. It was a complete shock. And it clearly wasn’t her. There were personal demons she was battling.”
Andy is also very pissed at whoever leaked the details of Kate’s alleged suicide note, saying: “I have yet to see any note left behind and am appalled that a private message to my daughter has been so heartlessly shared with the media.”
Andy’s statement contradicts previous reports that came straight from the mouth of Kate’s family. Kate’s father Frank Brosnahan recently spoke to The Kansas City Star, saying that he knew she was taking medication that he begged her not to take On top of Reta saying her sister’s death wasn’t expected, she also told The Kansas City Star that she urged Kate to seek help for her depression, but that Kate “chickened out” at the last minute. Sources tell People that Kate’s sister Reta has been estranged from their family for 10 years, and that the family is “disgusted” by her comments. If Reta really is talking out of her ass to the media, then it looks like Samantha Grant might have some company at the Deeply Embarrassing Siblings’ table.
