I do believe in true love for some people. 1st to have it, someone as to be completely so open with their heart, not everyone can do that--ever. I also believe that if true love ends with a death a person can find another love---just probably not that extra special love. I hope that makes sense.

As for the question about "The love of your life". Personally, I don't believe in the idea. I think each person who enters our lives touches us in a certain way at the time, and some attachments are more deeply bound than others, based on what is going on in your life at the time. I have been deeply saddened by the end of some of my relationships and overjoyed by the end of others. But I have moved on easily and life goes on.
Just my two cents

Now, I think people always carry a special place in their heart for their first love, though.

Yes, I do believe in the love of your life theory. Mainly because I have lived it. Not that the relationship will be immune to problems, but I do believe there is one person who is (not perfect,) but perfect for you. I was in a relationship with someone, and it didn't take long for us to fall deeply in love. We had problems that stemmed from personal issues we were each having (no blame game.) Fast forward, we have a difficult breakup. I went through the whole grieving process and slowly worked really hard to get my life back together and eventually, try to move on. And I did, for awhile. I'd date with an open heart, and genuinely give other guys a chance, but no one ever made me feel anything remotely as special as he did. Anyway, after a few years of no contact and a lot of healing, I reached out to him on a whim, knowing he had moved out of state. He could have been married with kids at that point, but I needed to correct the bad blood between us, not for the sake of getting back together, but at least to remain cordial. Anyway, he shared with me that he felt the same way. He had tried to move on and date other women, but it just wasn't the same. We're still in different states, and a long-distance relationship is out of the question, but my heart is overjoyed that he is at least a part of my life again, and not just an "asshole ex."
Anyway, sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't. But there's always that one person who makes an exceptionally deep imprint on your heart, and I do believe that is the love of your life. You might be content with another person, but your heart will feel the loss always.
Just my cheap two cents ;)

2nd, I believe you can have more than one loves of your life. I've had a few. They didn't work out, but I will always have love for those men.
I'm hoping that my husband will be the LAST love of my life! He's finally coming for a visit around the 21st of this month for 10 days. Haven't seen him (not counting skype) since my visit to Hong Kong in early May.

@ BEG, there is no such thing as "the one". There are lots of people with whom you are compatible. Some more than others, of course...which is why people get married, and why we pine over the loss of one person (and not think twice about losing someone else). It's just to say that if you lose that great compatibility, more than likely, there will be another, especially if you keep your heart and mind open to the possibility.

No. I believe romantic love is a choice. I am seriously weak for men and as corny as it sounds, I could fall in love 30 times a day. I have no doubt if something happened to my relationship with my husband that I would fall in love again. Maybe it would be more then what I have with him, maybe it wouldn't, but it definitely would happen.
