Barnabas Collins Is Dead
The sad news is that when I Googled "Barnabas Collins" 90% of the pictures that came up had Johnny Depp's face on them. The sadder news is that Jonathan Frid, who was the original Barnabas Collins on Dark Shadows from 1967-1971, passed away in Canada at the age of 87. USA Today says that Jonathan died from natural causes on Friday the 13th. After reading that he died on Friday the 13th, I expected a flash of lightning followed by a shadow on the wall in front of me of Jonathan rising from the dead. It didn't happen.
Jonathan joined Dark Shadows during the second season and Barnabas was only supposed to stay around for a handful of episodes, but he became a regular after audiences ate him up. After Dark Shadows ended, Jonathan did a few movies, television shows and plays before retiring in Canada.
Before you say, "Well, on a positive note, at least he won't be here to hiss at the mangled carcass of Dark Shadows butchered by Tim Burton", Jonathan shot a cameo for the movie last year. Let's hope that mess doesn't even make it to the dollar theaters in heaven.

Does anyone know if he saw sequel's trailer? That's probably ehat killed him. I'm just glad he died before he saw that campy piece of shit. I am so bummed out - Barnabas was my very first crush (yes I know it's creepy and wierd)
so bummed... My husband grew up watching DS but I had never seen them, so we've been watching an episode or two before bed on Netflix. So awesomely goth and camp! Jonathan Frid was great as Barnabus, even though the show was a soap opera and low-budget, you could tell he had a lot of stage training.
Dark Shadows would be a wonderful drinking game!
Take a drink when:
you see a mike boom
someone flubs a line
a stage hand gets in the scene
a fly buzzes the actors
the camera spins or doesn't focus
the doors don't stay closed
the mics don't work
Could never get into the show. I tried to watch the repeats, but there was too much talking with no blood or teeth. I need action in my vampires.

I really liked Dark Shadows and Barnabas. My sister and I were home alone in the summer bc our mom worked. Everyday we would get home from any outside activities by 3 pm to watch it together..... really fun & creepy.

I live in Koreatown. Saw an old lady walking across the street, poor thing couldn't move fast enough, the driver barely missed her. Not ONE fuck to give for their own, I'm black, so you know... I'm lucky to be alive.

YES. walking through a grocery store parking lot last month i saw a THREE car hit n run. driver did not stop, but combination of people put together his license plate. store security guard did jack shit. i saw whole thing and waited for 30 min for cops before i gave car owner my contact info and left.

RIP, Mr. Frid. Ah, the memories of running home from school and together with my brother watching "Dark Shadows" on the tube. It was pure Goth, it was camp, it was totally surreal, and it really pulled one in. Strange how the show was such a huge hit with young kids! I also loved the on-camera bloopers and technical problems - too expensive to re-shoot scenes.
Speaking of Canada and Canadians (Jonathan was a thespian hoser), growing up we watched a VERY weird early 70's Canadian kids show called "The Hilarious House of Frightenstein" with an actor called Billy Van, who played a vampire. Vincent Price was in the show, too. VERY weird program. Any Canadians remember this one?
Johnny Depp making a mockery and butchering his role ... no wonder the man keeled over!
I remember watching Dark Shadows as a kid... my mother loved it. She still talks about it to this day. I hope the hell she doesnt find out about Depp's new role.
Depp is fuckin' weird.
Don't worry, he'll be back in a hundred years when one of Willie Loomis' descendants opens his coffin while looking for the Collins Family's treasure.
