Twitter Reacts After Patti LaBelle’s BET Awards Tribute To Tina Turner Went All The Way Left

Last night the annual conference of participation trophies known as The BET Awards took place during its allocated time slot on the last Sunday in June. And although there were many moments when I looked at the screen and asked nobody in particular, “Who the fuck is this?” there was one face I will always recognize, Patti LaBelle. In the past, she has both performed and been honored, but last night she took to the stage to pay tribute to the iconic Tina Turner, who sadly passed away last month. Unfortunately, another sad thing was Patti’s performance, which is being raked over the coals as the long-awaited sequel to her critically acclaimed 1996 Christmas special titled “Where My Background Singers!”

First and foremost, I do not condone any slander against Miss Patti. Because this new generation only knows her as that lady who slings pre-processed Walmart pies during the holidays. But my generation (the greatest generation, mind you) knows her as that lady who scream-sings the emotions out of you like she’s performing an exorcism. However, People reports during her tribute; there were a few times when folks watched in confusion as she, ironically, provided simply the worst during her version of The Best as she had a memaw memory moment in real-time.

During the ceremony on Sunday, the Godmother of Soul paid tribute to the late Turner with a rendition of “The Best” and struggled to keep up with the lyrics — but she made it through and sounded immaculate.

LaBelle, 79, took to the stage in a sparkly fringe minidress reminiscent of Turner’s signature style for the performance. While her powerhouse vocals were expectedly impressive, she appeared unable to see the lyrics on the teleprompter throughout the tribute.

“I can’t see the words and I don’t know,” she told the crowd. “I’m tryin’, y’all!”

Midway through the rendition of Turner’s 1989 hit, LaBelle hilariously asked, “Where my background singers?” — calling back to her memorable performance of “This Christmas” at the 1996 National Tree Lighting Ceremony, when the “Lady Marmalade” musician’s cue cards were out of order.

Listen, Patti is damn near 80 years old. The fact that she didn’t have to be carted out on stage and propped up in front of a microphone proves her professionalism because there are people half her age who can’t get through singing their own songs. However, since we live in a world filled with clearance rack American Idol judges, everyone had something to say.

But also, there were folks ready to fight the haters on Patti’s behalf as much as I’m fighting tears knowing this is my last Monday with you guys (but we won’t get mushy just yet).

And finally, after doing the laziest bit of research ever (thank you, Twitter), I had my very own “Jinkeys!” moment when I discovered the culprit who brought down Miss Patti’s reputation! And it all could have been avoided had she shifted her ass a few feet over so Patti could see the words.

Oh, darling. If only you knew how much we hate you because it wasn’t Patti’s fault at all. And although Patti is getting roasted like the sweet potatoes thrown into her diabetes-inducing pies, all will be forgiven by Thanksgiving. Because food makes people forget everything.
