John Mellencamp Admits He Was A Bad Boyfriend To Meg Ryan

John Mellencamp is once again singing ‘The One Who Got Away” blues over his ill-fated relationship with Meg Ryan, her royal highness of rom-coms. Back in 2019, Meg ended their lengthy relationship by calling off their engagement and strolling off, saying, “Oh yeah…life goes on...”. It did for Meg, at least. Because in the years since their breakup, John must have had time to reflect on everything that went wrong between the two of them. And by “everything,” John admits that he was indeed the problem because he was a shitty boyfriend at the time.

John recently sat down with Esquire Magazine (via People) to discuss the type of romantic partner he is, and the reviews were not good. John uses his relationship with Meg as an example of why ladies from all over need to steer clear whenever Melt ‘Em Mellencamp is in town. Because he exhibits some toxic traits which he believes contributed to why Meg probably can’t stand him. A few years ago, right before John and Meg reunited after a breakup, John spoke with Howard Stern and informed him most of the women he dated probably hated him, Meg included.

“Oh, women hate me,” Mellencamp said. “I loved Meg Ryan. She hates me to death.”

When Stern asked why the actress would “hate” the singer, Mellencamp elaborated, “I think it’s because I’m a child. I throw fits, I gripe, I complain. I’m moody. Every bad thing that a fella can be, that’s me.”

Fast forward to a few years later, and John reiterated Meg’s longstanding side-eye for him. But rather than try to make Meg look like the crazy one, he takes full responsibility for the breakdown of their love. He admits when they first got together, they were striving for their own independence as rich folks who have people do everything for them. But unfortunately, even through all this self-discovery, John still found a way to fuck it up.

Speaking to Esquire in an interview published on Tuesday, the “Hurts So Good” singer took full responsibility for the on-and-off relationship’s demise, which came to an official end in 2019.

“I love Meg Ryan. I went with her for 10 years. She doesn’t love me so much,” Mellencamp, 71, told the outlet. “She’s a great girl. I’m just a s—ty boyfriend,”

Meg probably laughed when he referred to himself as the sewage of suitors, mainly because it’s information she was already aware of. And perhaps this new era of vulnerability is courtesy of John’s shakedown shaman of a daughter Teddi Mellencamp. Maybe she held a personal seminar with him where they held rose quartz and recited the alphabet backward to improve focus and forgiveness. Whatever they did, it clearly worked.
