The gracious “It was an honor being nominated” face has been thrown into the garbage because nobody loses graciously any more. And today’s example of “Man, fuck this!” after losing an award goes to Samuel L. Jackson. We all know Sam is a beast while portraying some of our most beloved characters, but did you know when he loses an award, he reacts just as badly as we would? It’s probably why we love him so much as an actor.
According to the New York Post, Sam was in the running for a Tony in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role or a Play with fellow thirsty thespians Jordan E. Cooper (for Ain’t No Mo’), Arian Moayed (for A Doll’s House), Brandon Uranowitz (for Leopoldstadt), and David Zayas (for Cost of Living). Sam was nominated for his role in The Piano Man, but unfortunately, his acting must have been out of tune since he lost to Brandon Uranowitz. And although Brandon’s win was met with much applause, Sam didn’t have time to pretend he wasn’t disappointed. And the moment was captured for everyone to see.
The 74-year-old actor was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play at the 76th annual Tony Awards for his part in “The Piano Lesson,” directed by his wife, LaTanya Richardson.
But when Jackson lost to Brandon Uranowitz — who won for his role in “Leopoldstadt” — viewers took notice of Jackson’s less-than-pleased reaction.
The “Pulp Fiction” actor seemingly looked disappointed, and he appeared to give a slight eye roll — and fans quickly turned his reaction into a meme online.
That “eye roll” looks more like the relief of a man who knows he can leave now. I see no disappointment here, but people over on Twitter have already turned his reaction into their latest “I’m Over This” GIF to send to all their friends after being asked to hit the streets when they really don’t want to.

Samuel L. Jackson looked like Nick Fury after realizing he didn't win his category. #TonyAwards

He may have missed out on his Tony, but let me be the first to Congratulate Sam on winning Best Side Eye of 2023! There are no trophies, but your ability to perfectly capture “This is some bullshit” will live in perpetuity for many generations. Take your bow, knowing we’ve all been there before, Sir.
