Samantha Jones Is Back! Well, She’s Back For One Scene In The Second Season Finale Of “And Just Like That…”

The gang is back together! Well… not really… not at all, actually. But through the magic of television editing and paying actresses huge sums of money (hopefully), Kim Cattrall‘s Samantha Jones will return to the Sex and the City revival And Just Like That… for the season 2 finale. But the gag is, Samantha was not even in the room with the other stars, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, or Kristin Davis, which is tragic because I think Kim actually only hates SJP. But it was obviously like pulling teeth to get her on the series, so we’ll just have to settle for a Samantha Jones cameo.
AJLT… has been trying to get us to pay attention to the second season harder than a male pop star gay-baits before an album release. They’re bringing back Aiden (played by John Corbett), and they’ve pitched him and Carrie kissing already, so they don’t really care about spoilers–CLEARLY–I mean, this Samantha news is spoiler-fucking-central, but how would we know to watch unless they told us?!
While Kim and SJP’s public falling out seemed to seal the deal that Samantha would never return apart from in text message form, someone at Max (formerly known as HBO Max) must have decided to stretch those purse strings and lure Kim in with some extra decimal points or something. I mean, who knows what Kim’s demands were, but considering she didn’t see or speak to any of the women, I’m pretty sure it was something like: “I’ll do it if I don’t have to speak to or see anyone.” via Variety:
But she will only appear in one scene. According to sources, Cattrall shot her dialogue on March 22 in New York City, without seeing or speaking with the stars of the series, including Sarah Jessica Parker, or with And Just Like That… showrunner Michael Patrick King.
In the scene, Samantha, who in the show has moved to London, will have a phone conversation with Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw. In the first season of And Just Like That… Carrie engaged with an estranged Samantha over text, and in the finale, the two made a plan to see each other in order to reconcile.
Another of Kim’s demands must have been that the original and iconic Sex and the City costume designer, Patricia Field, dress her. Because Pat Field, who hasn’t worked on AJLT, did Samantha’s costume for that one scene. Reps for Kim and Max didn’t respond to requests to comment, but Variety says that Kim’s episode will air in August, and this is just a one-and-done situation.
SJP has previously talked about how she doesn’t want Kim to come back into the SATC universe because of all the “public history of feelings on her part that she’s shared.” Welp… looks like Kim shared her feelings all the way to an easy check! I’m a little sad that Samantha won’t get to be in a scene with Sara Ramirez as Che Diaz because Samantha would probably read that trick with just one look, and it’d instantly become the best part of that revival.
UPDATE: A new trailer for the second season dropped, but sadly it’s Samantha-less.
