Drew Barrymore Backs Out From Hosting The MTV Movie & TV Awards In Solidarity With The Writers’ Strike

Two things: the MTV Movie & TV Awards still happen. And Drew Barrymore was set to host the 30th (!!!) MTV Movie & TV Awards this Sunday, but not anymore. Drew has dropped out last minute in support of the Writers Guild of America’s strike. A win for Hollywood writers everywhere! But a loss for people hoping to see Drew Barrymore kick off her shoes and get cross-legged comfy on a couch before cozying up to the popcorn award to get deep.

Only three days before the awards show, Variety says that Drew dropped a statement saying that she’s decided to skip hosting this year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards in support of the writers’ strike:

“I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike,” Barrymore said in a statement. “Everything we celebrate and honor about movies and television is born out of their creation. And until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait but I’ll be watching from home and hope you will join me. I thank MTV, who has truly been some of the best partners I have ever worked with. And I can’t wait to be a part of this next year, when I can truly celebrate everything that MTV has created, which is a show that allows fans to choose who the awards go to and is truly inclusive.”

As the ancient Hollywood proverb goes: the MTV Movie & TV Awards show must go on. MTV has decided to move forward with the ceremony without a host, so I’ll be tuning in just to see how that pans out. But we can still expect to see a few sketches she managed to film before the strike. To spare themselves the humiliation, MTV canceled the red carpet portion of the evening since it looks like other celebrities may skip out too. Lala Kent of Vanderpump Rules announced that she’s skipping the show to support the writers. So if LALA KENT isn’t even showing up, who the hell is?!

The only thing more surprising than Drew backing out last minute is the fact that MTV actually invited her back to host next year’s 2024 award show instead of reading her for filth for leaving them high and dry so last minute- which is either an act of solidarity or a penny-pinching maneuver recycling the commercials they already shot with her for next year.
