Dwyane Wade Moved His Family Out Of Florida Due To Its Anti-LGBTQ Agenda

Dwyane Wade spent years as a Florida mainstay, killing it on the court with the Miami Heat before retiring back in 2019. Now, he spends his time killing it as a supportive dad and advocate for his daughter, Zaya, who is transgender. But, ever since Ron DeSantis was elected governor, Florida has become a place where Disney magic and LGBTQ+ rights have come under fire. Because of this, Dwyane, his (literally cockblocking, but gorgeous) wife Gabrielle Union, and their five kids have taken their ball and gone home–to a different state.

Zaya came out as transgender a few years ago to the full support of Dwyane and Gabrielle, and recently made her runway debut at Paris Fashion Week. via TMZ:

…Dwyane’s 15-year-old daughter Zaya came out as transgender in 2020. She’s since legally changed her name and gender. Wade has been very outspoken in his support of his daughter.

But one look at the comment sections of anything Dwyane or Gabrielle posts about Zaya on Instagram shows the transphobia and bigotry they deal with outside of their bubble:

Dwyane recently guested on Headliners with Rachel Nichols and shared that he made the decision to move his family to an undisclosed different state because Florida has enacted legislation like the “Don’t Say Gay” bill that’s caused it to become an even more unaccepting, rights-snatching, yee-haw humid cesspool than it had been before, with no end to the madness in sight.

“That’s another reason why I don’t live in [Florida]. A lot of people don’t know that,” D-Wade responded when Nichols asked what message he’d send to state legislators.

The 3x NBA champ continued … “I have to make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions.”

Florida governor, Ron DeSantis, and many state-level lawmakers have passed controversial legislation, including the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill, amongst other laws, and Wade flat out says his family wouldn’t be comfortable.

“You know, obviously, the taxes is great. Having Wade County is great. But my family would not be accepted or feel comfortable there. And, so that’s one of the reasons why I don’t live there,” Dwyane told Nichols.

Florida’s state symbol has basically become a toothless gator in a MAGA hat clutching a Bible with an AR-15 strapped to its back, and as such, the Wade’s Florida exodus isn’t a rare occurrence among its LGBTQ residents. And while Ron continues to get outsmarted by a mouse, threatens to run for POTUS, and reigns over Florida, Dwyane and his family are busy fighting the good fight with the support of a real queen:
