Brian Cox Praises “Succession” For Ending At The Right Time Unlike “Game Of Thrones”

Brian Cox is doing what he does best and giving his straightforward opinion sprinkled in with some petty shade. While the cast of Succession has mixed feelings about the show ending with its fourth season, Brian’s sighing sweet relief as we’re nearing the end of the Roy family’s power struggle, feeling like Jesse Armstrong’s decision to quit while they’re ahead is a major step up compared to the notoriously shitty ending of another classic HBO power struggle show, Game Of Thrones. If you haven’t seen last night’s episode of Succession yet, then avert your eyes! **MAJOR MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!**

Turns out Brian thinks too many American shows go past their expiration dates and that wrapping up now while things are good can give their audience an ending that doesn’t totally ruin the show for them. This is exactly the mistake Game Of Thrones made, which churned out an ending so bad fans demanded a redo. Here’s what Brian dished about it according to TV Line:

“You think about Game of Thrones, when they didn’t know what they were doing at the end, and they had an ending which was not really satisfactory. And the audience was furious,” Cox said. He referred to how, when the fantasy series drew to a close in 2019, fan backlash was so strong that one created an online petition for HBO to “remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers.” It currently has nearly 1.9 million signatures. (HBO boss Casey Bloys has said that re-shooting the final run of episodes was “not something that we seriously considered.”)

Brian probably wants the ending to be perfect cause there’s no way he’s ever coming back on that set to reshoot. Work with Jeremy Strong again? Over his dead body! And speaking of his dead body,  yesterday, while many in the world were celebrating the resurrection of Jesus, the Roy family learned the news of their father’s expiration. That’s right; Logan Roy has finally fucked off into the great unknown! (He’s dead.) Brian talked to Vulture about last night’s episode, and when asked if he knew Jesse Armstrong’s reasoning for killing off Logan, he was basically like, “DUH,” saying:

The explanation was that the reason was obvious. It’s about succession. You need a corpse. If it was a different kind of show, it could have gone into a more mysterious frame — Is Logan dead? That kind of stuff. But I think Jesse realized it had to be the way it had to be, and he made the decision to do that.

We had to be very careful about giving away the game. I came in three episodes later [than when the rest of the episode was filmed] to do the death thing, and I didn’t do anything. I just lay there and had the phone by my ear. That’s why I think there was a very strong contention and very strong reason to think that maybe he’s not dead at all. Maybe it’s all a ruse! If you think about it, the last image is a body bag. Anybody could be in that body bag … There’s a possibility.

Even Brian thought he’d be around until the end of the season; his surprise passing almost perfectly mirrors the real-life, unexpectedness of death. And many fans have responded to the episode by declaring Emmys for everyone!

We all knew this was coming, but it happened so early in the season I half expected Logan to jump out of the body bag and tell everyone to fuck off. Or maybe that’s the series finale. When all of the Roy children are lying in a state of exhaustion on a pile of rubble after fighting each other for the throne, Logan Roy will pop up like, “Surprise, bitch.
