Brian Cox Drags Method Acting Again And Wants Actors To Just “Read The Fucking Lines”

The fourth and final season of HBO’s Succession starts on Sunday, and no one is probably happier about this than Brian Cox because it means he never has to deal with Jeremy Strong’s method fuckery ever again. Brian Cox has made his feelings about method acting very clear before (read: he hates it). Recently, he called Jeremy Strong a very good actor but said it’s “fucking annoying” to be around someone who is always in character. But Jeremy doesn’t mind and told GQ in a recent interview that Brian has “earned the right” to call out his method acting. And, well, Brian took advantage of that “right” once again during his appearance on Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Brian made sure we all know that he meant what he said.
If you need another example of Brian talking shit about method acting, here’s what he said last September at the Toronto International Film Festival during a Q&A for the movie Prisoner’s Daughter. via The Hollywood Reporter:
“I don’t hold a lot of the American shit, having to have a religious experience every time you play a part. It’s crap,” Cox said of totally immersing himself in a movie or TV series performance to the point of obsession.
“I don’t hang onto the characters I play. I let them go through me. The thing is to be ready to accept, as an actor. You stand there, you’re ready to accept whatever is thrown at you,” he added.
Brian leaned into his stance when doing a bit with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show on Wednesday night, saying he teaches a Master class where his powerful advice to actors is, “Say the fucking lines,” according to the Hollywood Reporter:
When introducing a video that he said would “more eloquently” express his feelings about Method acting, he teed up the clip by saying, “Well you know, Jimmy, I’ve been a little harsh on it. And I’m sorry about that. In fact, I’ve been trying to set the record straight in a Master Class series of acting that I’ve been doing.” The actor then appears in a Master Class spoof on the craft of acting, where he shouts, “Just fucking do it! Say the fucking lines, and don’t bump into the fucking furniture.”
Here’s that clip:
Brian also said that he’s okay with the show ending, saying, “When the party’s at the best, leave.” Which is the professional way of saying “DUCES!”. I wouldn’t be surprised if, while everyone was crying and hugging goodbye on the last day of shooting, Brian quickly ducked out on a Waystar Royco Black Hawke. The only time this cast is probably ever gonna hear from this man again is when they hear his voice over a McDonald’s commercial!
