Law Roach Is Still Talking About His Retirement AND The Louis Vuitton Show Drama With Zendaya

Last week Law Roach announced after decades of playing dress up with stars like Celine Dion, Priyanka Chopra JONAS, and his forever client Zendaya he would be retiring from celebrity styling. And the world lost its damn mind in the aftermath, wondering why he would give up several checks?  Many believed his decision to walk away was because of the now infamous moment when he wasn’t able to sit front row next to Zendaya at a Louis Vuitton show in Paris, a claim he has repeatedly said wasn’t true. However, Law is back again to have his “And one more thing…” moment by still talking about his retirement and the Vuitton video but digging a little deeper into exactly what happened and why he doesn’t want to swaddle the super-rich in expensive dressy clothes anymore.

During an interview with The Cut’s  Lindsay Peoples, Law wanted to clarify a few things, like the story behind the Vuitton video. Law did not look pleased, and many thought Zendaya’s quick point to sit behind her meant, “Your days are numbered bitch; get to the back!

In reality, Law and Zendaya were both stuck in traffic and arrived at the show late. After a long trek to the runway, Zendaya bolted for the last seat, leaving Law standing around like the unfortunate loser in an haute couture version of Musical Chairs. When Zendaya turned around, she was letting Law know the seat behind her was for her assistant, Darnell Appling, and once Law realized there was no place for him to sit, his brain immediately went into “Does not compute” mode.

I got this suit on, the hair, and we hot, you know, I was trying to make it. And so that’s what this thing was, because I’m programmed. I’m coming from a house where I know where my seat is, right? It’s right next to her, and it’s always right next to her, because that’s part of our relationship and our interaction, seeing the clothes together. And you know, the little cues, and little such, like, that’s the look. You know, and so when that didn’t happen, it just … And somebody was like, “Law, you have to sit,” and I was like, “I don’t know where I’m sitting.” That became really tough, because it made people think that Zendaya wasn’t taking care of me and wasn’t making sure I was taken care of.

Here’s Law explaining that moment:

If the phrase “All dressed up with nowhere to go” were ever turned into a movie, this moment would be the source material. Law admitted this triggered his anxiety, which had been a huge thing for him during his career. So his decision to quit celebrity styling had nothing to do with the Vuitton show but has more to do with him protecting his own mental health.

I haven’t been happy, honestly, in a really long time. And the culmination of everything that’s been happening in my career these last few days kind of just pushed me over the edge. And it’s just like, You know what? I’ve done everything. I’m very grateful that I’ve been able to move and climb in this industry the way I have. But I can’t say that I didn’t do that without suffering. And I think as Black people in this country, it’s embedded in us to suffer, right? We feel like to be successful, we have to suffer. You suffer through things to get to the other side

There are tons of stars who are not OK right now, knowing Law won’t be there to save them from future fashion faux pas, but he’s finally taking care of himself, which is a good thing. And I’m sure more than a few of his former clients walk by their closets thinking of Law before bursting into a teary-eyed rendition of Whitney Houston’s Didn’t We Almost Have It All?
