John Mulaney’s Ex Wife Anna Marie Tendler Claims A Video She Posted Accusing Taylor Swift Of Copying Her Was “A Joke”

It seemed, for a while, that comedian John Mulaney’s ex-wife, Anna Marie Tendler, had managed to make the most out of a shitty situation in which her very famous husband used their childfree-by-choice lifestyle as fodder for his comedy routine, then turned around and knocked up his side piece, Olivia Munn, and asked for a divorce. In the months that followed, Anna took that sack of lemons, or in this case, Japanese sweet potatoes, and turned them into art; earning herself a lot of new fans in the doing. Unfortunately, with great follower count comes great responsibility. And over the weekend, Anna fuuuuuuuuuuuuucked up big time by posting a TikTok accusing Taylor Swift, the Queen, I’m sorry, Mayor of spinning shit into gold, of copying one of her post-divorce photographs, “in tone and in aesthetics,” for one of the set pieces in her juggernaut Eras Tour.

According to Us Weekly, presumably from a secret location known only to herself and her legal team, Anna claims it was “meant to be a joke.” Still, never has the tag “You In Danger Girl” been more apt than it is today. Us reports:

This is why she can’t have nice things. Anna Marie Tendler is walking back a joke she made about Taylor Swift‘s Eras stage design after sparking confusion online.

The 37-year-old artist uploaded a TikTok video of her reaction to the 33-year-old Grammy winner’s new tour, which kicked off in Arizona on Friday, March 17. In the since-deleted video, Tendler shared her thoughts about the props Swift used while performing the Evermore ballad “Tolerate It.”

“Uh, Taylor. My girl,” the Connecticut native began. “This ‘Tolerate It’ setup looks strikingly like one of my photographs in tone and in aesthetics. It doesn’t totally feel like parallel thinking to me.”

Tendler used the app’s green screen feature to show the artwork in question, which shows her sitting at an empty dining table in a long flowing dress. The image is titled “Dinner in March” and was taken amid her divorce from ex-husband John Mulaney. (Us Weekly confirmed in May 2021 that the twosome called it quits after six years of marriage. Their divorce was finalized in January 2022.)

Anna’s Tiktok account is currently set to private, but while fidelity may be fleeting, the internet is forever. So here’s the culmination of the series of unfortunate events that shall continue to plague Anna Evermore, courtesy of @oopsletsdeletethat.

I’m sorry, but if this was a joke, where’s the punchline? $5,000 for an unframed print? I guess that’s kind of funny, given the backstory, but not like, “haha” take my money funny. Maybe when you receive the print, it has a giant “/S” spray painted on it. At any rate, the Swifties were not amused.

The makeup artist’s Eras TikTok raised eyebrows among diehard Swift fans, some of whom questioned the video’s intent. “This is so funny to me bc if it’s not satire then she’s straight up accusing taylor swift of stealing her idea of *checks notes* setting a table,” one Twitter user wrote after reposting the clip.

However, some defended Anna Marie, with one person writing, “SHES JOKING SHES JOKING SWIFTIES STAND DOWN,” and another noted they were “99.9 [percent] sure she’s a Swiftie.” After deleting her post, Anna Marie risked life and limb by wading into the Swiftie-infested comments herself saying, “Most of my videos are jokes or satire! When I realized it wasn’t landing as a joke I deleted it. Didn’t mean offense.” But since she’s disabled her TikTok, we can’t go in and examine each video, frame by frame, looking for the tell-tale signs of satire. That would take an order of discovery, but I’m sure Taylor’s lawyers are already on it. You’d think being married to a comedian for that long, Anna Marie would have picked up at least a few tricks of the trade. Even the person at Us Weekly who wrote this article has a better sense of comedic timing.

The Cats actress returned to State Farm Stadium for night two on Saturday, March 18, with nearly the same songs and minor tweaks to her outfits.

Now That’s Entertainment! SHES JOKING SHES JOKING SWIFTIES STAND DOWN.
