Amanda Bynes Has Been Placed On A 5150 Hold After Suffering A Psychotic Breakdown
This past weekend, 36-year-old Amanda Bynes was scheduled to appear at ’90s Con in Connecticut. It would have been her first public appearance since she was freed from her nine-year conservatorship a year ago. In January, Amanda told People that she was excited to reunite with her All That cast mates and meet her fans. Unfortunately, her appearance was canceled at the last minute due to “illness.” Kel Mitchell of Kenan & Kel fame told ET that he and Kenan Thompson were “praying for her.” Now we know why Amanda pulled out. TMZ reports she suffered a psychotic break over the weekend and has been placed on a psychiatric hold.
On Sunday morning, Amanda was seen walking near downtown Los Angeles without any clothes. Apparently, she waved a car down and told the driver that she was coming down from a psychotic episode. Then, she called 911 herself. How scary. TMZ’s law enforcement moles claim Amanda was taken to a nearby police station, where a mental health team determined she needed to be placed under a 5150 hold. Luckily, sources say Amanda was physically unharmed, “though things could’ve been much worse given the area where she was found.” A source close to Amanda says she’s currently hospitalized and will likely continue to receive care for another week.
Amanda has gone through it in the last decade. Tomorrow, it will be exactly ten years since she tweeted that she wanted Drake to murder her vagina. That summer, after months of legal trouble and questionable wigs, she was put on a 5150 hold after setting fire to a neighbor’s driveway. Her mom, Lynn Bynes, was granted a temporary conservatorship. The next year, Lynn and Amanda’s dad, Rick Bynes, scored a full-time conservatorship. That’s also when Amanda revealed she’d been diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder and manic depression. Over the next few years, Amanda had her ups and downs. Last winter, she filed to end her conservatorship. It was a move both her mom and psychiatrist supported. The next month, she was freed from her parents’ control. The last we heard from Amanda, she was going to cosmetology school to become a manicurist.
It’s really scary to think that Amanda “came to” naked and wandering the streets. It makes me think of Vivien Leigh. For some reason, I went on a deep Vivien and Laurence Olivier dive last night. I knew that Vivien had struggled with bipolar disorder, but I didn’t realize the extent of her struggles. Apparently, in the mid-40s, Vivien suffered the first of many bipolar breakdowns. Before an episode, she’d go through several days of hyperactivity, followed by a period of depression and then an “explosive breakdown.” Afterward, Vivien would have no memory of the episode and was embarrassed. So, my thoughts are with Amanda during this difficult time. And honestly, the fact that Amanda flagged a car down and managed to ask for help is a great sign. Let’s all join Kenan and Kel in praying for her recovery (is a sentence I never thought I’d write).
