Diddy Is Also In The Running To Purchase A Majority Stake In BET

Tyler Perry isn’t the only suitor who has come a’ callin’ for BET‘s hand in holy matrimony. Now it’s being reported Sean “Diddy” Combs has slid in on his knees across the stage singing “Baby baby PLEASE!!!” as a brand new contender seeking to purchase a majority stake in BET after Paramount Global announced it was potentially looking to sell it. With the addition of media mogul/comedian Byron Allen, this brings the total up to three major Black players in the media realm who want to whisk BET away from the arms of the white man and return the majority of the control back into the proud raised fists of The Culture.

This is a very interesting choice for Diddy to be making since he’s owned the network Revolt for the past decade, which has its own brand of unique programming. But honestly, for this foray into the new era of BET I am 100,000% #TeamTyler because, at least with him, we know what we’re getting (which ain’t much). But if we give the reins over to Diddy, we may end up with twenty-four hours of his dim-witted dame Yung Miami on our screens talking about getting pissed on and her futile fights with fellow concubines from his ever-growing harem. And that kind of programming would only be interesting to watch for her. Still, Variety reports one of the main reasons Diddy has thrown his hat into the ring is because he wants to build a global Black media empire.

A source close to Combs tells Variety that the global music icon and record executive turned multi-industry entrepreneur is “exploring the opportunity to purchase BET as a part of his strategy to build a Black-owned global media powerhouse.”

Another source familiar with the situation tells Variety, that while Combs has expressed interest in acquiring BET, he is not yet considered to be in talks with Paramount to purchase a majority stake. In fact, that insider says that Paramount is not yet in talks with anyone at this point in the process, but that many parties have expressed interest.

Paramount Global declined Variety‘s request for comment.

I don’t want to make any predictions too early, but a part of me believes Tyler and Diddy will come to an agreement where they both buy-in and create new programming together. And by “programming,” I, of course, mean Diddy will allow Tyler to throw on his Madea drag and re-create whatever video he wants to while Diddy screams “Bad Boy For Life!!” in the background. Because that’s the real reason why they’re doing this.
