Rolling Stone UK Calls Lana Del Rey The Greatest Songwriter Of The 21st Century

There are still almost 77 years left until the 22nd century, but that didn’t stop Rolling Stone UK from declaring that 37-year-old Lana Del Rey is the greatest songwriter of the 21st century during an interview with her (a big win for the Tumblr girls of 2012). Lana should celebrate by putting her new title from RS UK on a billboard in her ex’s hometown.

Lana Del Rey’s self-titled debut album came out in 2010, but nobody really listened to it. It was her 2012 follow-up, Born To Die, that amassed a cult following of girls wearing chokers. But Lana Del Rey (born name: Elizabeth Woolridge Grant), who was the prototype moody girl before Lorde, Sky Ferreira, and Billie Eilish, was blasted by musical journalists who hadn’t fallen for her charm of blended glamour and sadness, labeling her as “a hack, a fraud, a rich kid whose entire identity was a construct of a major label and her management.” But now, after sitting out for almost a decade and having seemingly traded in her retro style for Forever 21, Lana’s ready to get back into the game. According to Rolling Stone, her newest album, Did You know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd, is distinct from her past work:

After a decade of feeling unexcited after the critical response to her debut album Born to Die, the greatest American songwriter of the 21st century is finally inspired about her career and life again.

Did You know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd feels once again so different from what she’s done before and yet a collage of everything she’s ever made — it even ends with the grimy, heavy, original and unheard version of ‘Venice Bitch’ — is testament to where Del Rey is nine studio albums into her career.

Songwriter, producer, and BFF to Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff has sized up Lana Del Rey (born name: Elizabeth Woodridge Grant) as a pioneer in music, declaring her as “boundaryless,” saying:

“She’s reached a point in her work, which is really my favourite place to work from, where there’s nowhere to go but way out into the fucking wilderness artistically. Go chase radio? That’d be so stupid. Go chase trends? So stupid. She created all the trends. It’s a freeing place, if you can accept it. The only place to go is to be a leader.”

During the interview, Lana said that she’s much happier now and has sailed passed the “turbulent times” that “No matter what happens from here on out, I already learned everything — I can tell — I’ve learned everything I need to know, I don’t need to experience anything else.” On that note, let’s take a moment of silence for all the girls who based their whole personality on being a sad human vintage doily with daddy issues because of Lana’s past music. I mean, based on what Lana says now, happiness is officially in, and depression is out!
