Johnny Depp Is Selling Doodles He Made Of His Dead “Friends & Heroes”

Say what you will about Johnny Depp’s teeth, skin and hair because whatever he may lack in hygiene, he more than makes up for in audacity, if not artistic talent. Variety reports that since the conclusion of the back-to-back lawsuits he instigated against The Sun and his ex-wife Amber Heard, Johnny’s been hard at work refilling his coffers by scribbling over photographs of public figures and selling them at a London art gallery for thousands of dollars. The collection, titled Friends & Heroes II aka Dead Men Can’t Sue, features the likenesses of Heath Ledger, Bob Marley, Hunter S. Thompson, and River Phoenix.

This offering comes on the heels of his NFT collection of similar images. Friends & Heroes I included images of Keith Richards, Al Pacino, Bob Dylan, and Elizabeth Taylor, who was a lady. So Johnny doesn’t need to hear your thoughts on misogyny, OK? Here’s a look at the already sold-out collection. Yes, all 780 of these bad boys flew out the door at $5,400 a pop in the first week. However, if you have $21,000 burning a hole in your pocket, Johnny probably accidentally dropped his lit ciggie in there when he nodded off, so he technically owes you “the entire four-piece collection, which comes signed by Depp.

Those AI bots finally have got some competition on their hands! These some-of-a-kind masterpieces may look like they were done on an iPad using MS Paint while sitting in a courtroom listening to his ex-wife testify about his out-of-control drug use, but according to Castle Fine Art Galleries, “each image has been stripped back to a simpler and iconic portrayal of the subject, which Johnny has then developed and energised with his characteristic freehand flourishes,” which, let’s be real, does not negate the former. Variety reports:

Under his artist profile on the gallery’s site, it states that Depp was born in Kentucky, educated at Miramar High School in Florida and has won numerous awards including a People’s Choice Award for Favourite Movie Icon and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“As an actor, Depp is known for his depth of research and commitment to characterisation,” his biography on the site reads. “He is an innate student of human behaviour; studying, translating, and harnessing qualities he sees in others to weave into the tapestry of the persona he is creating. This has resulted in laser sharp powers of observation, and the ability to identify and utilise the subtlest nuance.”

“He has wielded this skill in his visual art, using it to create a true authenticity and depth in the portraits of those who have become the most important figures in his life, those who have altered the course of his life, providing influence and inspiration. A closer look at his portraiture reveals the qualities that Depp felt his subjects revealed most keenly to him, or are his strongest points of recall when revisiting times shared and memories made.”

I know it’s not shade, because that wouldn’t make any sense from a business standpoint. I think they’re trying their best. But for the life of me, I don’t think I could come up with a shadier-sounding way to say “Johnny’s broke so he’s using what little capacity he has left for holding a digital pen steady enough to trace over pictures of people who died before they could end up like him and calling it art,” if I tried. But that wouldn’t make any sense from a business standpoint when I can simply point out the obvious. I didn’t even have to try. Here’s a look at “the artist” at “work.
