Maddie, the Queen of Trick Dogs!
Google tells me that the most famous citizen of Altoona, Wisconsin was NFLer Fred “Fuzzy” Thurston, who played for the Green Bay Packers in the 50s and 60s. The football field at Altoona High School is named after him. Well, Fuzzy had a good, long run as Altoona, WI’s most famous citizen, but that title now belongs to Maddie! Maddie has become a superstar on the dog competition scene thanks to her impeccable skills at turning tricks (not those kind of tricks!).
Maddie’s reign at the American Kennel Club Competition actually happened last October, but I didn’t hear about her trick-turning talents until reader Jan dropped her into my inbox as an HSOTD nomination. Last year, Maddie the Australian Terrier competed in the 2022 AKC Trick Dog Competition, which was held virtually. Not only is Maddie a master at tricks, but she’s also a master at DRAMA and STORY. Because during her routine at the AKC Trick Dog Competition, she busted out a Harry Potter theme, including her magically turning into a witch. via People:
The challenges include word charades, cup stacking, and walking on a narrow balance beam. She even makes a “magical potion” with her wand! Mary Burch, AKC Family Dog Director, praised Maddie’s routine as something that was “a joy to watch.”
151 competitors submitted videos to the competition, and the three judges picked Maddie as the winner of them all! Here’s Maddie blowing the minds of the judges by giving them TALENT and THI-TURR!
Honestly, I shouldn’t be able to see a thing while watching that video. My screen should be filled with all the treats Maddie’s human trainer threw at her for doing such a flawless job. And that 5-minute routine was more entertaining than all the Harry Potter movies combined!
