Here’s The First Look At Lady Gaga As Harley Quinn In The “Joker” Sequel “Folie à Deux”
15 years. Three presidencies. Two (and a half) exhausting Oscar campaigns. That is how long we’ve had to wait for Lady Gaga to lay all her cards on the table and finally show us her, her, her, her, her Joker Face. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joker director Todd Philips shared a special Valentine message to all those hopeless romantics sociopaths out there with a first look at Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn in the upcoming Joker sequel Folie à Deux.
Harley Quinn? I harley know her, amiright!? Here’s Gaga flipping the script and stopping Joaquin Phoenix dead in his tracks with a “hey, just wanted to take another look at you.” Bradley Cooper, eat your heart out before the Joker does!
Either that or she is trying to suck the Oscar mojo right out of his face. Campaigning this early is only a Folie if you Don’t. THR reports that “filming is underway in New York and Los Angeles,” and that DC has slated Folie à Deux for October 4, 2024.
The first Joker was a surprise hit, with the R-rated movie becoming one of the top-grossing DC films of all time. It followed Arthur Fleck, an aspiring stand-up and clown whose mental health issues cause him to spiral after suffering rejection after rejection. He ultimately assumes the Joker persona and becomes a folk hero. The sequel title, Folie à Deux, is a reference to a medical term for an identical or similar mental disorder impacting two or more people, usually members of the same family.
The Joker sequel arrives amid a transition for DC, with newly installed DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran developing a slate of film, TV, animation and video game projects that will all take place in a shared universe. The exceptions will be rare projects such as Joker or Matt Reeves’ The Batman sequel that will be branded as DC Elseworlds titles, a term taken from the comics in which alternate-universe stories are told.
We got a taste of this Elseworlds business in the trailer for The Flash. Therefore it’s possible, if unlikely, that Ezra Miller‘s international crime Rumspringa was actually just an unfortunate result of a combination of Ezra taking The Method a little too far and getting tossed up and turned upside down in the Elseworlds to the point that they thought THEY were the Joker. But Joaquin has come too far and smoked way too many cigarettes in preparation for Folie à Deux to let some fly-by-night criminal nuisance steal his thunder. In case you missed it, a couple of months ago, Todd shared a peek of Joaquin getting into character for Joker 2: ICP (Insane Clown Pectorals).
That Joker! He’s an irregular Working Girl. He’s got a head for sin, and bod that’s a crime. This is what happens when you let Lady Gaga suck the Oscar out of you. But as this is a musical and all, and it takes two to tango, let’s not forget that Joaquin has some Oscar campaigning tricks up his sleeve too. His very, very stinky sleeves.
