Pretend “You” Serial Killer Pen Badgely Blames Netflix For Fueling Serial Killer Fandom
It seems like lately, a lot of these actors out here are taking the job of play-acting a little too seriously. Penn Badgley, for example, has been wringing his pretend stabbing hands about the ethics of playing a serial killer on the Netflix You since the beginning. It’s like, sir, your name is Penn Badgley; we’re not taking anything you do seriously! Nevertheless, Penn would like to remind us, for the umpteenth time, that he doesn’t think serial killers should be attractive, not even pretend ones with bedroom eyes and an unruly womb-groomer, and that there’s something really wrong with You, you, and “you” if you don’t agree.
People reports that Penn was recently asked again for his thoughts about people who get the tingles for people who kill and according to him, that’s partly on Netflix, but mostly on you. Especially if you’re into Evan Peters pretending to be Jeffry Dahmer. Which is rich coming from a man who’s been cosplaying Charles Manson IRL for years!
Even though Penn Badgley plays a fictional killer, he is adamantly opposed to romanticizing real-life murderers on screen.
When asked about fellow Netflix show Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (in which Evan Peters portrayed serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer), the You star said that viewers who find themselves fixated on killers to “need to look at that, inside.”
The 36-year-old actor, who has attracted his fair share of unwanted attraction for playing homicidal stalker Joe Goldberg, continued in conversation with Entertainment Tonight: “To be fair, with our show, you’re meant to fall in love with [Joe]. That’s on us.”
But, he added, “Ted Bundy? That’s on you. Jeffrey Dahmer? That is on — Netflix. That is squarely on the shoulders of Netflix.”
Penn was all, “I get how you’d want to fuck me. But him? You need to get your head examined.” Hopefully while it’s still attached, though, right? Now, to be fair, this makes Penn sound like more of a stick in the mud than he might actually be. This was all said in a rapid-fire question thing for TikTok so he wasn’t able to launch into a more nuanced lecture about the socio-sexual politics he previously told us that You was working to address in a “dismantling, deconstructive manner.” Whatever that means. Here’s Penn trying to kink shame the shameless.
