Open Post: Hosted By The Lost Dog Who Turned Up At Her Former Shelter And Rang The Doorbell

Bailey had only just been rescued when she opted to leave her new family’s residence (probably just in pursuit of doing garden variety hood dog stuff with her friends) late last month. Texas is a big place, though (pretty much their only other boast, aside from their driving dog), and Bailey got lost. Her new owners began the search for her and also alerted the shelter she came from that she was on the lam. To everyone’s surprise, Bailey showed up on the shelter’s doorstep at 1 AM and nonchalantly rang the doorbell for them to come let her in. Spike and Bobi are two “Open Post” dogs who’ve recently gotten awards for being old as hell, but now we have Bailey, and she should also get an award for being a very good girl!
People says Bailey was freshly adopted from the Animal Rescue League of El Paso. So when she set off on a journey from her new home, her old shelter was also keeping an eye out for her and made a Facebook post to contact them about any Bailey sightings.
There were a few sightings, but Bailey can’t be tamed, and Bailey will decide when she’s done gallivanting thankyouverymuch! She eventually decided her mischievous journey had run its course and ended up at the shelter– which was 10 miles away from her new home–and demanded to be let in immediately by ringing the doorbell.
Early on Jan. 31, Bailey surprised the Animal Rescue League of El Paso by coming to them. The dog showed up at the shelter and rang the doorbell looking for help.
Loretta Hyde, the founder of Animal Rescue League of El Paso, told KFOX14 that she was amazed that the dog found her way back to the shelter, especially considering her new home is 10 miles away.
“These dogs are smarter than people give them credit for. How did she know what direction to go?” Hyde said.
And the shelter shared the unexpected but happy update, complete with Bailey’s adorably pleading mug on their Ring Doorbell camera:
Way to go, Bailey! You’d definitely beat “Dog Crate Couple” in a battle of wits!
