The Razzies Have Rescinded Their “Worst Actor” Nomination For The 12-Year-Old Who Starred In “Firestarter”
You’d be hard-pressed to find a more beleaguered awards body than the HFPA, the hosts of the Golden Globes. But as evidenced by their triumphant return to network television, albeit on a Tuesday night, their assurances of increased transparency, diversity, and bottomless champagne were enough to lure Brad Pitt away from his pottery studio. However, even enough champagne to fill the Nile can’t restore the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation to its glory days when big stars like *checks notes* Tom Green accepted their awards in person. Last year The Razzie Awards came under fire for devoting an entire category to the work of Bruce Willis, who, as we know, suffers from aphasia. They eventually rescinded that nomination, as well as Shelley Duvall‘s 1981 nomination for The Shining. And earlier this week, a 12-year-old girl, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, woke up to learn she’d been nominated for Worst Actor for a Blumhouse remake of Firestarter.
Now, I don’t know how Ryan felt about that nod, but many took issue with it, prompting them to rescind the nomination. And later, after their initial response was found to be lacking in any damn sense at all, to establish a minimum age of 18 for nominees going forward. This is what they deserve for snubbing Ryan’s Firestarter co-star Zac Efron, time and time again. It really highlights what a joke these awards are. After people complained that the nomination, and the awards themselves, were “mean-spirited“ and “classless,” Razzies co-founder John Wilson’s initial response was to tell Buzzfeed that “the rage is interesting, perhaps somewhat justified, but I think overblown.” Did I mention that Ryan was 11 at the time of filming and learned how to light-grown men’s asses on fire with her mind for the role? According to The Independent:
Responding to the criticism, Razzies co-founder John Wilson told Buzzfeed that roughly 1,100 voting members put Armstrong in fifth place, but organizers had still debated whether to include her because of her age.
They ultimately decided to respect the votes and include Armstrong.
“I can see how it could be taken that way [as mean]. I don’t think that was how it was meant,” Wilson said. “I think people who get upset about it – I don’t even know how to say this. The rage is interesting perhaps somewhat justified, but I think overblown.
“There’s a righteousness about it. It’s the Razzie Awards, for goodness’ sake!”
Wilson admitted that the Razzies had probably “misstepped very badly”.
Oh, you think? Well, it wasn’t until John’s chonies burst into flames that he realized just how badly he had misstepped. According to Variety:
The Razzie Awards have introduced an age limit for nominations following blowback after 12-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong (pictured above) was nominated for Worst Actress.
In a statement, Razzies founder John Wilson apologized and confirmed Armstrong’s name has been removed from the ballot. He also said that going forward under-18s would not be eligible to be nominated for the awards.
In a statement, Wilson called the criticism “valid” and said Armstrong’s name had been removed from the ballot. He added: “We also believe a public apology is owed Ms. Armstrong, and wish to say we regret any hurt she experienced as a result of our choices.”
Mess with fire, son; you’re gonna get burned. Mess with my girl Ryan; you’re gonna get incinerated. For this reason, and many, many others, I hereby nominate The Razzie Awards for Messiest Awards Season Bitch for the second consecutive year. Don’t agree with me? Great. Pay me $40 bucks, and I’ll let you become a voting member. That’s how voting rights for the Golden Raspberry Academy work anyway.
