I’m sure Diablo Cody is somewhere laughing her ass off (see also: replacement sucker Erin Cressida Wilson) at the news that Universal Pictures has scrapped the planned Madonna-directed Madonna biopic she attempted to help Madonna write starring Madonna-approved Madonna Julia Garner. Good thing then that after spending months alone in a room with Madonna trying to convince her that the studio won’t accept vibes in lieu of a script, Diablo knows that asses will come and go. If Diablo can’t find her original ass, she can just go out and get a new one. So it wasn’t a complete waste of her time.
As we know, Madonna’s going to be shaking whichever ass she has at the time all over the globe as she embarks on her Celebration Tour starting in July. According to Variety, “insiders familiar with Madonna,” say she is “committed to making a film about her life one day,” but that right now, “her sole focus is the tour.” So, Madonna. Madonna is the insider familiar with Madonna. There is literally no function in Hollywood that Madonna can’t fulfill. When the HFPA announced they now have Black members, they were talking about Madonna.
The anticipated biopic of music legend Madonna is taking an indefinite holiday. The project, which the icon was going to direct herself, is no longer in development at Universal Pictures, multiple sources told Variety.
Speculation over the fate of the movie began instantly after Madonna announced a career-spanning world tour last week — one that sold out shows in New York, London, Paris and other cities in minutes. Insiders familiar with Madonna said her sole focus Is the tour, but she remains committed to making a film about her life one day.
Representatives for Madonna, Garner and Universal Pictures declined to comment on the matter.
While announced in 2020, development on the film lingered on through the end of 2022. Madonna worked on two script drafts encompassing large periods of her creative and personal life. An earlier version was written with Oscar winner Diablo Cody (their writing sessions were disseminated wide on social media). Erin Cressida Wilson (“Secretary,” “The Girl on the Train”) took a second pass.
Why do I have a feeling that Madonna being forced to hire an actor to play Madonna in Madonna: Madonna, Madonna, Madonna: The Madonna Story is the real issue here? Why else would Madonna be spending all this time and energy testing the limits of Filter Technology if she didn’t plan on playing herself, Madonna, herself? Or maybe she’s had someone else in mind all along and is just waiting for the fateful she finally finds this Susan person. That’s probably why the world tour has to come first. She’s desperate!
