Vanessa Hudgens Is “Crying” Over A Joke About Austin Butler’s “Elvis” Accent

Vanessa Hudgen’s social media antics are getting attention again, but thankfully this time, she’s not shrugging over people dying from COVID-19. Vanessa’s ex, Austin Butler, has gone from “hot guy” on The Carrie Diaries to soon-to-be Best Actor Oscar nominee for playing Elvis. Vanessa apparently foresaw Austin’s run in Elvis, and Austin himself said as much–but he did so while not mentioning the ex he dated for nine years by name. It seems Vanessa may not have taken too kindly to this, as she recently replied to someone mocking Austin’s maybe-fake-but-definitely-here-to-stay Elvis voice.

Baz Luhrmann‘s Elvis has been raking in standing ovations and accolades for Austin. He picked up a Golden Globe for his performance and is pretty much a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination. During a Hollywood Reporter roundtable, Austin repeated a story Vanessa had said in the past, where his “friend” told him he should play Elvis in a movie, via People:

“The month before I heard that Baz [Luhrmann] was making the movie, I was going to look at Christmas lights with a friend,” Butler recently said during The Hollywood Reporter‘s Actors Roundtable. “There was an Elvis Christmas song on the radio and I was singing along, and my friend looked over at me and goes, “You’ve got to play Elvis.” I said, “Oh, that’s such a long shot.””

“A couple of weeks later, I was playing the piano,” he continued. “I never really sang for any of my friends or anything. That same friend was there and I was playing the piano. She said, “I’m serious. You gotta figure out how you can get the rights to a script.” Then my agent called and said, “So Baz Luhrmann is making an Elvis film.””

Vanessa had told basically the same story on an episode of Live with Kelly and Ryan in 2019. Too bad Vanessa can’t speak an Oscar-nominating role into her own existence, but maybe she was just born to play three slightly different versions of herself in seasonal Netflix movies?

While Austin is getting attention from the acting crowd for his work and is putting in even more work in his Oscar campaign (that includes pretending Vanessa doesn’t exist), the rest of the Internet is having fun with the fact that he’s still talking like Elvis. Austin’s singing coach has defended him, but Vanessa seems to be on our side; she left a comment on someone making fun of Austin’s Oscar campaign.

Yes, this may be a case of Vanessa trolling Austin over his voice, but maybe it’s also something else. We know that Vanessa can communicate with the dead, so maybe she’s spoken to Elvis himself, and she knows he’s not satisfied with Austin’s performance, and she’s crying and laughing with his ghost about it.
