Julian Sands Has Been Missing For Nearly A Week After Going Hiking In California Mountains

Yesterday, 2023 continued to make its early bid for the worst year of the 2020s by giving us the horrible news that British actor Julian Sands, who lives in North Hollywood, CA, has been missing since last Friday after he went for a hike in the Mt. Baldy area of Southern California. 65-year-old Julian was reported missing on Friday evening, but officials didn’t announce his identity until yesterday. A separate search is happening for another hiker, 61-year-old Bob Gregory of Hawthorne, CA, who was reported missing on Monday after he went hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains. Over the weekend, search teams had an impossible time looking for the hikers because of storms and threats of an avalanche, so they had to call it off. Even though conditions are still icier and messier than the Snow Miser’s insides, the search continues.

Gloria Huerta, a rep for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, tells KABC that Julian’s wife, Evgenia Citkowitz, reported him missing at 7:30 pm on Friday the 13th. Evgenia told cops that he went for a hike earlier that day and never came back. His car was later found in the area where he went hiking. Here’s a recent picture of Julian from KTLA:

The Independent says that authorities believe Julian was hiking along the Baldy Bowl Trail in the San Gabriel Mountains. His three children, 37-year-old Henry (who he shares with his first wife Sarah Sands), 26-year-old Natalya, and 23-year-old Imogen (his daughters with Evgenia), have joined the search. Henry is working with an experienced climber to retrace his father’s route. Julian is a regular hiker and has climbed the Swiss Alps. A couple of years ago, he told The Guardian that he’s happiest when he is “close to a mountain summit on a glorious cold morning.

Bob Gregory’s family tells authorities that he went hiking in the Crystal Lake area (not THAT Crystal Lake) of the San Gabriel Mountains, and his family is afraid that he fell and hurt himself. Police Bob’s tracing his cell phone to see if they can find him. Search teams are using drones to look for both Julian and Bob, and they’re searching on the ground too, but that hasn’t been easy. via KTLA:

Search teams combed the area on the ground and from the air on Tuesday. However, those efforts were limited Wednesday to air crews only due to icy conditions on the tough terrain, authorities said.

“The conditions are too dangerous. In fact, even some of the more experienced hikers are getting themselves into trouble up there so we recommend that people to stay away from that area,” said Huerta.

The SBCSD has also been warning people about hiking alone through Mt. Baldy because of the conditions. Just in the past month, two hikers have died after falling.

Julian has been in tons and tons of movies and films. He was in The Killing Fields, Arachnophobia, Leaving Las Vegas, played the title role in Warlock, made everyone reach for their smelling salts as the swoon-inducing George Emerson in A Room with a View, and starred in the work of pure fuckery known as Boxing Helena. Here’s hoping that they find Julian and Bob really soon and that they’re okay. And I fully expect Julian to slap down every trick who mentioned that he was in Boxing Helena.
