Adam Lambert Reacted To The News That Theo James Might Star In A George Michael Biopic Before His Estate Debunked Being A Part Of It

Seven Christmases ago, The Grim Reaper tricked Santa into skipping George Michael‘s house so he could swoop in and steal him away from us forever. And although he left some drama behind after checking into the Pearly Gates, his legacy hasn’t been tarnished too much. That may change soon since Hollywood might be producing a George Michael biopic. But once nuclear explosion voiced rocker Adam Lambert discovered Theo James might be up for the titular role, he immediately rang the alarm with his disapproval right before George’s estate had the last word on this matter.

According to Billboard, Adam is sick and tired of icons from the LGBTQ+ community being portrayed by straight men in film. And honestly, perhaps Adam caught wind of this news and immediately called his agent demanding, “Whaddaya want from me??!!!” since he may have been interested in taking on this role as well. But whether or not there ever was a film, Adam did not remain silent about his disappointment with Theo’s consideration.

When The Advocate shared the news to Instagram, Adam Lambert criticized the thought. “Yay another straight man playing a gay icon,” the singer commented, along with an eye roll emoji. The comment was seemingly in reference to other biopics about gay stars played by straight men, such as Rami Malek playing Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody and Taron Egerton playing Elton John in Rocketman.

For context, this rumor originated during Andy Cohen‘s weekly gossip gala Watch What Happens Live!, where Theo was a guest. When asked if he would be interested in portraying George, Theo said, “Oh yeah, I would love that, he’s an icon…He’s a lot of Greek, and I’m a lot of Greek. Put that Greek together, and you get falafel.” The Daily Mail then claimed that a big-budget biopic was in the works and that Theo James was the top pick to play George. The Mail also claimed that George Michael’s estate approved of the biopic. But if a George Michael biopic starring Theo James really is in the works, it does not have the backing from his estate. The Guardian reports George’s estate denied being involved:

Yesterday, Michael’s estate released a statement denying any involvement in the project. “To all of George’s Lovelies, fans and lovers of his music, a story has been published stating that George Michael’s family has endorsed a so called ‘biopic’ about his life,” it said. “On behalf of George’s family and [George Michael Entertainment] we want to make it clear that there is no truth whatsoever in this story, we know nothing about this project and will not be endorsing it in any way.”

This doesn’t mean we still won’t get a shitty biopic if a studio is greedy enough. It just won’t be affiliated with George’s estate, so this might still happen. And if it does, prepare yourselves for the surprise sleeper hit of 2023 Before You Go-Go!: The George Michael Story. It will premiere on Lifetime. It will star Andy Dick as George Michael, and yes, it will be awful.
