Jennifer Lopez Confirms She Was Supposed To Kiss Madonna At The 2003 VMAs Instead Of Christina Aguilera
Now that Madonna will be ceasing her mummification treatments in preparation for a brand new tour starting this summer, perhaps she may want to bring Jennifer Lopez along to correct an egregious error. We all remember back in 2003 when Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera were treated to a mouth-to-mouth session with Madonna during the MTV Video Music Awards, leading to one of the most iconic (and cringeworthy) moments in VMA history. Now, imagine if we yanked Xtina offstage and substituted her deflated cakes with J. Lo’s rotund rump because she claims she was the original choice to dance alongside Madonna.
Let’s take a trip to the pre-iPhone era of 2003 when MTV still pretended to care about music. Britney and Xtina were the biggest pop tarts in town, so being allowed to perform next to (let alone swap saliva with) Madonna was considered a blessed event. Here’s that performance:
But now, as the twentieth anniversary of their three-way kiss looms ahead, JLo is ready to crush all of our precious memories like she did while giving the worse karaoke version of Motown EVER. In an interview with E! News (via People), JLo confirmed the rumor that it was supposed to be her lips planted firmly on Madge’s kissin’ hole because she was the first choice and good ol’ what’s her name was her understudy.
Jennifer Lopez was originally slated to perform alongside — and likely kiss — Madonna at the award show rather than Aguilera, the “Jenny from the Block” singer told E! News during a recent interview alongside Josh Duhamel to promote their upcoming film, Shotgun Wedding.
“I was filming a movie in Canada, and we had met – me, her and Britney — to do it at her home, and then I just couldn’t get off the film,” Lopez, 53, told the outlet. “So, we couldn’t do it.”
“They got Christina Aguilera, I think, to do it, and I didn’t wind up doing it,” continued the Marry Me actress before expressing her admiration for the Queen of Pop, 64. “I love Madonna. I’m a huge fan. I always have been.”
JLo, please. Don’t act like you didn’t know who they got to replace you. “Wasn’t it…Christina…Applegate? I’m not sure“. If you can remember you were in Gigli, you clearly remember the time you fumbled the bag by not kissing Madonna at the VMAs. And I’m sure she probably knew that there would be a “shocking” kiss and decided to skip the VMAs because who wants to spend the rest of the night trying to wash the taste of Madonna out of their mouths? There isn’t enough Listerine in the world for that.
