Amanda Seyfried Is Working On A Musical Adaptation Of “Thelma & Louise” With Even Rachel Wood Possibly Riding Shotgun

Mamma Mia! Just when Amanda Seyfried’s career was picking up speed, she’s about to drive that shit right off a cliff. And she might be taking Evan Rachel Wood down with her. Because according to Variety, the new musical that Amanda was so “deep in the process of creating” that she couldn’t make it accept her Golden Globe for The Dropout is a musical adaptation of Thelma & Louise.

Callie Khouri, who won an Oscar for writing the original 1991 screenplay, will co-write the book for the musical. Neko Case will do the music. Back in 2012, Lindsay Lohan pitched her own idea for a Thelma & Louise reboot (presumably) during a coke-fueled fever dream after watching The Hunger Games when she tweeted, “Jennifer Lawrence in ‘The Hunger Games’ is genius. I want to do Thelma&Louise w/her but ala Natural Born Killers (style wise) 2 girls-2 guys.” But alas, Lindsay’s twin dreams of Renewed Fame and Renewed Fortune just held hands and took a header into the abyss. Thank goodness for airbags and seat belts! Sadly, this Jennifer Lawrence person was never heard from again. Variety reports:

A “Thelma & Louise” musical has been in the works since at least 2021 with the film’s screenwriter, Callie Khouri, attached and writing the book with Haley Feiffer, as well as indie singer/songwriter Neko Case creating the score. Scott Delman serves as the producer.

Reports in 2021 noted that theatre director Trip Cullman (“Six Degrees of Separation”) was also on board to helm the musical adaptation of the iconic 1991 film, which starred Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, and won Khouri the Oscar for best writing, screenplay written directly for screen. (The movie, which earned six Oscar noms, is also famous for being Brad Pitt’s first major project.)
Amanda revealed the news on Instagram in a video she recorded in lieu of accepting her GG in person.

On Wednesday, Seyfried posted a video on Instagram confirming the reason for her absence without specifying it was for “Thelma & Louise: The Musical.”

“I am in New York,” Seyfried said. “I was on FaceTime with my ‘Dropout’ team, my wonderful ‘Dropout’ team who are the reason I got this award. It is a true honor to have been a part of that. I had to miss it because I am doing something that is magic and it’s musical. So I’m finally getting to do something that I’ve never really done. That’s all I can really say about it. Hopefully more soon. But it’s a lot of work. It’s more fun, and it’s been a great night. So in lieu of any acceptance speech I’m just going to say thanks to all my ‘Dropout’ family and my family.”

Pffft! Amanda’s been around for a minute now. We’re supposed to believe she’s never done it NBK Style (2-girls 2-guys)? I get that she’s a married woman and all, but I think we all know that what happens on Mamma Mia Island stays on Mamma Mia Island for a reason! Here’s Amanda’s announcement.

Sounds great but if Pierce Brosnan‘s not playing Brad Pitt’s part— Eye. Yam. OUT!
