Lizzo Says That Cancel Culture Has Become “Misused And Misdirected”
The term “cancel culture” has become as mainstream as apple pie, even though it’s thrown around like nothing and may currently be a fairy tale phrase since not many are actually canceled. Well, Lizzo decided it was time to speak on it so people understand why those words no longer hold the same weight as they did not too many years ago.
Yahoo! reports Lizzo, who faced cancellation herself for coming out as a FoCB (Friend of Chris Brown), went over to give her thoughts on the current state of “cancel culture” and how it needs a reboot because the term has lost all of its flavor in the years since becoming highly popularized.
In a tweet posted on Sunday, the Grammy winner argued that the practice of canceling others has “become trendy, misused and misdirected,” overshadowing more serious issues and “real outrage” in the process.
“This may be a random time to say this but it’s on my heart.. cancel culture is appropriation,” Lizzo wrote on her Twitter account. “There was real outrage from truly marginalized people and now it’s become trendy, misused and misdirected.”
The “About Damn Time” singer continued, sharing that she “hopes we can phase out of this and focus our outrage on the real problems.” While she didn’t elaborate on the topic, Lizzo received a flurry of replies from fans who lauded her take.

I hope we can phase out of this & focus our outrage on the real problems.

And Lizzo’s fans understand what she’s saying because they, too, believe it’s time to tie the term “cancel culture” to a rocket and ship it off into parts unknown. And the word “woke“ can also go far, far away because it has completely lost all meaning at this point.
Same with the term woke which is AAVE and now the bigots have tried to co-opt it ever since. The anti-Black racists are always trying to colonize ideologies of the oppressed.

That's a really great take. I hadn't thought to look at it like that. And it's very, very true. The power has gone out of it, and that's a real loss for marginalized peoples.
Brings "triggered" to mind. That's a very real thing for people with trauma histories. Now it's a joke.

I think moving forward, as soon as certain terms become mainstream, let’s take them out back and put them out of their misery. Because there’s nothing worse than having one of your favorite terms, get beaten into submission once everyone thinks they know what it means (and yes, I’m looking at you, “da bomb“).
