Open Post: Hosted By David Bryne And Miley Cyrus’ New Year’s Eve Cover Of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”

While shit at CNN was mostly sober, over at NBC on New Year’s Eve, the peacock was definitely snorting some mind-alternating hallucinogenics. Miley Cyrus hosted her second annual Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party on NBC with help from extremely special co-host, her godmother and universal angel Dolly Parton. Never mind that Miley’s special was way too fucking light on the Dolly; she had other guests like Latto, Sia, Rae Sremmurd, Parasite Hilton, and David Byrne of Talking Heads. Since Dolly is Dolly, she was the bright shining star of the show without even trying, but a close second was David Byrne!

The theme of Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party seemed to be “drunken karaoke family night in the living room” because there were covers and messiness galore. One cover Miley did was of David Bowie’s Let’s Dance, and she brought out David Byrne to help her out. This may have been the first time of the night when I stirred at my drink with my finger to see if it was spiked with LSD or something because seeing David Byrne and Miley Cyrus do Let’s Dance on New Year’s Eve was not something I expected. As David Byrne put his very David Byrne-like vocals on Let’s Dance, Miley danced like a factory-defective robotic flamingo trying to do the Wednesday Addams dance.

Miley and David also performed his song Everybody’s Coming To My House together, but that wasn’t it for David. About a minute into Sia’s performance of Unstoppable, David popped out. It seemed like a stagehand pushed him out there and told him to sing because he didn’t seem to know all the words, and I don’t think they rehearsed this mess. It was truly a beautiful piece of fuckery, thanks to David and Sia’s voices going together like Kanye and Twitter, and Sia looking like Whatever Happened To Baby Top Ramen? Here’s the performance of Unstoppable that will probably make you scream, “JUST STOP!

Sadly, we never got a duet between Dolly and David. What a missed opportunity for a David Byrne remix of Dolly Parton’s disco masterpiece, Baby I’m Burnin’, called Baby I’m Byrne-in’.  But Dolly and Miley did open the show with a cover of I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll. At first, it was hard for me to concentrate on the music and performance since I was too focused on the gorgeous vision of Dolly serving La Tigresa del Oriente elegance, as Miley looked like she just fell off of the Rock of Love Bus. But some hating tricks did focus on the music and performance, and (prepare to GASP) accused Dolly of a lip-sync fail! Oh here go Hell come! It’s at the 0:25 mark below, and I know what happened. Dolly was thrown off by looking at that piece of brown in Miley’s mostly-blond mop and was too stunned to sing, so her wig stepped in and sang that line for her. Yes, her wigs sing.

Godmother Dolly also joined Miley for a performance of Wrecking Ball and I Will Always Love You:

And I will always love anything with Dolly in it, but that performance was definitely missing the sight of David Bryne accidentally wandering onto the stage.
