Open Post: Hosted By The Reporter Whose Boiling Water Snow Trick Flopped On Air

The US is currently being hit with record-cold temperatures. The weather is as sharp, cutting, and frigid as Victoria Beckham’s shoulder when her daughter-in-law is around. Of course, an occurrence such as this brings out the tomfoolery of reporters around the country. Our great nation’s favorite pastime is sending weatherman (and sports guys) out into hurricanes, floods, and blizzards to get us the most maniacal footage possible. CNN sent reporter Lucy Kafanov to perform a little trick to show us just how cold it was, and the odds of her performance going off without a hitch were as good as a snowball’s chances in hell.

The reporter attempted to throw some boiling water into the air, but instead of turning into snow, it turned into lukewarm water. Rather than let Kafanov’s embarrassment die a quiet death, CNN kept going back to her to perform the trick. via Deadline:

CNN sent correspondent Lucy Kafanov out into the streets of Denver yesterday, where it was -11 and according to Kafanov felt like -20, for some performative reporting. The network went back to Kafanov repeatedly over the course of the morning so she could throw a cup of boiling water in the air to demonstrate to viewers just how cold it was. Of course the first time, at 10:13 a.m., it didn’t work. An hour later, the water did, in fact, turn to ice in midair. The third time, just after noon, it only sort of worked.

Probably knowing that the boiling water wouldn’t work, Kafanov had the clever idea of putting a glass of wine on the street and leaving it there to freeze over. Apparently, wine freezes at 22 degrees (not like water at 32 degrees), and she was rewarded with a glass of solid wine. We could just have weather people say, “It’s damn just cold, stay indoors,” but TV station producers simply demand that we ruin a perfectly good alcoholic beverage. Here’s the reporter’s attempt:

At least Kafanov’s miracle of turning wine into wine was better than whatever was happening with this Weather Channel reporter:

In summary, no one should be out there. For those of you facing the cold, stay safe and feel free to keep warm with a glass of liquid wine!
