Open Post: Hosted By The Mom Who Saved Her Daughter From A Raccoon Attack

I live in Toronto, where raccoons outnumber people 5 to 1* (a la New Zealanders and sheep), and so far, I haven’t had any negative experiences. Most of the raccoons are just cute lil’ garbage-eatin’ bumblers. But this isn’t always the case. See: the MacNamara family’s recent fight for their lives in Ashford, Connecticut. People reports that last Friday morning, 5-year-old Rylee was standing on her front porch when a raging raccoon randomly attacked her leg. Rylee screamed for help, and her mother, Logan Kelsey MacNamara, ran outside to save the day. Logan pulled the critter off Rylee’s leg, pushed her inside, and flung the vicious raccoon onto the lawn. After Logan got back inside her house, the raccoon picked himself off the grass and continued on his merry way. Another day, another terrorized family!

*a totally made-up statistic

The entire incident was caught on the family’s surveillance camera, and Logan posted the video to Facebook. In the caption, she wrote that Rylee wanted her mother to “show everyone what the racoon did.” She also shared that they were headed to get checked for rabies “following this unprovoked raccoon attack”:

Geoff Krukar, a wildlife biologist for Connecticut’s Department of Energy & Environmental Protection, gave this statement to FOX 61. via People:

“The mother behaved in a way that was very heroic. I think she did everything correctly by avoiding getting bit and warning the neighbor to stay back and getting the child to safety,” Krukar said. “If they see a raccoon that is acting abnormally, that could be frothing at the mouth, pursuing them, getting in close proximity, they should definitely report that to the authorities.”

So the expert thinks Rylee’s raccoon-attacker was sick. And, sure, maybe he was. Or maybe, just maybe, there’s a new TikTok trend where kids shove delicious garbage down their pants, and it was too much for this poor, hungry raccoon to resist.“Gimme your tasty trouser trash, ya little brat!” Only Rylee and the raccoon know the real story… and I hope they both sell their version to competing streaming services. It’ll be the new The Vow vs. Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult.
