George Clooney Was Doubly Honored At The Kennedy Center Honors When Julia Roberts Came Wearing His Face
Last night some of the biggest stars in Hollywood gathered in New York City to rub elbows with the Washington elite at the 45th annual Kennedy Center Honors. Due to the pandemic and former president Donald Trump’s boycott of the awards, this is the first big gala in five years and the stars came dressed to impress. This year’s honorees included Gladys Knight and all four of the Irish Pips, sometimes referred to as U2, Christian pop singer Amy Grant, Cuban American composer-conductor Tania León (not to be confused with Lydia Tár, totally different lady), and Nespresso dude George Clooney. There were a couple of surprises at the ceremony. For one, Sacha Baron Cohen showed up in character as Borat even though I thought we had decided as a group after 2020’s presidential election that satire was dead. Also, there was Emma Roberts’ aunt, actress Julia Roberts, who is, apparently, strangely obsessed with George Clooney.
According to Yahoo News!, the elder Ms. Roberts came dressed in a custom Moschino dress emblazoned with dozens of framed portraits of George’s face. It is truly bizarre. I checked her IMBD page and it doesn’t seem like Emma and George have ever worked together so I must assume Julia and George must have met sometime before Emma’s career took off and she became the second most famous Roberts in Hollywood after her father, Eric Roberts. The actress showed up to the Kennedy Center Honors at The White House over the weekend wearing a cropped black blazer and a custom Moschino dress that included framed portraits of George Clooney all over it.
Her look was custom designed by Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott, and she completed the ensemble with subtle Chopard jewels and soft, tousled wavy hair.
Robert’s Clooney-printed ensemble was a shoutout to her longtime friend, who was among the honorees celebrated over the weekend. The Kennedy Center Honors recognize “artists who have made an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of America,” according to the center’s website.
Clooney was one of five honorees for the event and attended with his wife Amal Clooney.
Roberts, who attended the event with her husband Danny Moder, later changed into an all-black suited look.
If I were George I’d keep a close eye on that lady. Married to another man and still carrying on like that. Emma would never!
Luckily for everyone involved, SBC was on hand to lighten the mood with a few jokes about the rise in antisemitism in America, presumably by way of Kanye West et al, now that Borat’s hero with the “pretty orange skin” is no longer at the helm. The Daily Beast reports:
According to The Washington Post, Cohen, while speaking as the fictional Kazakh journalist, “made remarks that arguably stretched the audience’s comfort zone” during the event as he began talking about the former president. “I’m told president of U.S. and A. is here. Where are you, Mr. Trump?” He then spots Joe Biden as the camera pans to the president. Borat tells him: “You don’t look so good! Where has your glorious big belly gone and your pretty orange skin? I see you have a new wife. Woah-woah-woah!” However, according to the Daily Mail, it was Borat’s reference to controversial rapper Kanye West that had that audience breaking into applause. “I must say I am very upset about the anti semitism in USA. It is not fair. Kazakhstan is number one Jew crushing nation. Stop stealing our hobby. Stop the steal. Stop the steal,” he said. The “showstopping moment,” according to The Post, was when Borat praised the band “by the name of Me 2.” (U2 had just performed prior to Cohen’s set.) “Please remove your wretched album from my iPhone 6. Your band fight oppressions from around the world. Stop it!”
Ah, an oldie but a goodie. We can’t blame him. Who else is a post-satire Borat supposed to rib now that we’ve already watched the former president’s former chief counsel follow up his major motion picture debut as Guy Who Thinks He Might Get Blown with an appearance on The Masked Singer in between depositions for federal investigations in which he’s accused of election tampering, if not fall back on the satire of yore? His wife?!
