And now for some good news: The White Lotus has been renewed by HBO for a third season. The renewal comes three episodes into the second season, which is currently airing. Season one was set at the White Lotus resort in Hawaii, while season two is set at another White Lotus in Sicily. Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya McQuoid and her shady-ass husband, played by Jon Gries (aka Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite) are the only characters who have appeared in both seasons. So, where will Jennifer/Tanya travel next? Is there a White Lotus in Iceland? The people need to see Jennifer/Tanya get her tongue stuck to the wall of an ice hotel.
Deadline reports that The White Lotus, which started as “an experiment in contained filming during the pandemic,” is the most-watched show on HBO Max. The second season premiere of season 2 scored 7.6 million viewers. They confirm that the next chapter of the show will feature new characters and a brand-new location. Creator Mike White wrote and directed all of season two and executive produced with David Bernad and Mark Kamine. He says:
“There’s no place I’d rather work than HBO and there’s no people I’d rather partner with than Casey Bloys, Francesca Orsi, Nora Skinner and their incredible team. I feel so lucky to get this opportunity again and am excited to reunite with my amazingly talented collaborators on The White Lotus.”
HBO bigwig Francesca Orsi says:
“Reflecting on The White Lotus’ humble, run-and-gun origin as a contained pandemic production, it’s impossible not to be awestruck by how Mike orchestrated one of the buzziest and most critically acclaimed shows. And yet, he’s only continued to reach new heights in season 2, which is the ultimate testament to Mike’s raw, unparalleled vision. His courage to explore the uncharted waters of the human psyche, paired with his signature irreverent humor and buoyant directing style, have us all dreaming of more vacation days at the resort we’ve come to adore. We couldn’t be more thrilled to get the chance to collaborate on a third season together.”
Well, the sexual tension/anxiety of season two is off the charts, and I have so many questions. Is Theo James trying to fuck Aubrey Plaza and her husband (Will Sharpe)? Will Mike White’s old Enlightened pal Laura Dern get off the phone and make an IRL appearance as the wife of Christopha Moltisanti/Michael Imperioli? And who’s gonna die? My money’s on Tanya’s husband, Will Sharpe, and Theo James. So, yep, I’ll definitely be tuning into season three, if only to see how they remix that banger theme song:
