Chrissy, the human, and Samuel, her actual squirrel friend!
My Modern Met and Reddit bring us the sweet tale of a Canadian woman named Chrissy who found a down-and-out baby squirrel and nursed him back to health. The squirrel, which Chrissy named Samuel, has a better memory than me (although a water-damaged RAM chip from the 90s has a better memory than me) because he has not forgotten the human savior who cared for him. He visits her every day to play. Here I was going through life, not knowing that I haven’t truly lived until I’ve played with the squirrel (not a euphemism) I saved from death!
In a Reddit post, Chrissy writes that when Samuel was around four weeks old, she found him outside of her home in Vancouver, and he was in a bad way. Samuel was malnourished, and he had a wound. Chrissy immediately threw on her nurse hat and called Critter Care Wildlife, an organization that helps treat and release injured orphan animals in British Columbia. They gave her advice on how to feed and treat Samuel’s owwies. Chrissy obviously did everything right because Samuel eventually got healthy enough to return to the wild. Chrissy and her family said their bittersweet goodbyes to him. But while they were probably singing, I Will Always Love You, thinking they were never going to see their squirrel friend again, he was hollering out Wiz Khalifa’s See You Again. Because Samuel moved close by (aka a tree in Chrissy’s yard) and came back the next day to play with her. He’s been back every day since. Chrissy learned that it’s not that uncommon for orphaned squirrels who’ve been cared for by humans to return to the scene of their healing.
There are several documented cases orphaned squirrels have been raised by humans and then, released into the wild where they do seem to remember their human hosts. In some cases, they even return to reconnect with their human saviors.
