A Former Yeezy Employee Claims They Were Fired For Suggesting He Play Drake Songs In the Office

Not too long ago, Kanye West was sitting on top of a billion-dollar empire. Then his mouth hole and tweeting fingers, which have gotten him in plenty of trouble before, really got him into trouble as his anti-Semitic and anti-Black views became louder, and louder. Several companies washed their hands of him, including Adidas. And former employees began sharing what a nightmare it was working for him. Well, more are talking and saying that Kanye fired employees for the dumbest reasons. Case in point: one former Yeezy employee claims Kanye pink-slipped them for suggesting they play some Drake songs in the office.

In a recent Rolling Stone article, dozens of former Yeezy employees confirmed what the rest of us who were never employed by him know: Kanye is an unpredictable mess. And the shitshow of a personality he exhibits on social media is exactly who he is in real life (which also isn’t breaking news). Because they signed NDAs, the Yeezy whistleblowers all remained anonymous. NDAs aside, so would I! Imagine putting your name on this article and having Kanye pop up at your house like in that scene in Love Actually, holding up cue cards with the words I WILL END YOU!!! in all caps.  But apparently, Kanye subjected his employees to horrible work conditions ranging from deplorable work hours to taking on the persona of his former BFF Donald Trump, and eerily saying, “You’re fired!” for no good reason.

Staffers claim the hours were brutal – 12-to-15-hour days were the norm – all while navigating West’s eccentricities and on-the-fly demands, such as packing up an entire office on one day’s notice only to move again the next day.

West was not only at the center of the storm, but the creator of the madness. “He thrives off of chaos,” one employee who worked for Yeezy in 2020 says. “He needs that around to keep him hungry and motivated and all this other stuff.”

Another thing Kanye was known for was playing his own music during design sessions because why wouldn’t he? His ego needs to be fed by his own creative genius, but not all of the staffers wanted to be subjected to Flashing Lights on a loop for fifteen hours a day.  When one staffer decided to take a stand, Kanye immediately asked them what artist he should play instead. They chose the kryptonite to his self-appointed Superman persona by uttering Drake’s name. What happened next should come as no surprise to anyone.

After someone suggested he play something else, West looked around the room, landing on a nearby Yeezy employee and asking them what he should play. The staffer, who leaned more punk and rock than hip-hop, tells Rolling Stone they were caught off-guard and fumbled for an answer. “I thought, ‘Oh, he’s a rapper, I should probably mention some rap,’” the early staffer tells Rolling Stone. The staffer landed on Drake. “Big mistake — the next day I was fired,” the former staffer claims.

Now that Yeezy is free from its relationship with both Gap and Adidas, Kanye can run his business however he wants to. And I guess the way he really wants to run it is into the ground. Because who in the hell is going to work for him now that people know how toxic his work environment is? He better get his kids some sewing machines for Christmas because they’re about to become his new design team for the foreseeable future.
